How To Breathe In College

The struggle of college made a little less....struggle-y

How To Breathe In College

College kids. We're known for being reckless, exhausted, stressed, and impulsive (to name a few). But I mean...how can you not be? If you're working, a full-time student, keeping up a social life, and trying to keep up on your health, you'd be stressed the frack out too!!! As a sophomore, I've had the pleasure of experiencing this for almost two years, so I've picked up a few tips for y'all on how you can attempt to save yourself from burning out.

1. Eat a snack.

Yes, I know what you're thinking, "what if I gain the freshman fifteen?!". Well friend, the freshman fifteen is a very real thing, but if you know how to balance yourself you have nothing to worry about. So whether you're snacking on some carrots and ranch or a microwave cup of easy-mac, food is always a pick-me-up.

2. Move. Somehow.

Exercise is so important to your health AND your mood. I have those days where exercise is the last thing I want to do, so I count walking to class as exercise, but making sure to stay active can actually flip your mood. Exercise releases endorphins into your brain, which is a chemical to help fight stress. This is why after exercising you mentally feel clearer and eventually happier. So in addition to those walks to class, do some yoga, go for a jog, or drop it like a squat.

3. Water, water, water.

This is one of the simplest things you can do for yourself. Staying hydrated can lead to so many benefits, such as increased energy (put down the caffeine), promotion of weight loss, improved skin complexion (bye bye stress spots), puts you in a good mood, and saves you money!

4. Hang out with your friends.

Struggling through college with your homies is one of the strongest bonding experiences and stress relieving activities. Venting about your annoying professor or doing something fun like an intramural sport is one of the best parts of college. You only have four years (maybe an extra or two for some) to experience everything college has to offer, so get turnt, study hard, join clubs, and meet many amazing people -- don't miss out.

5. Sleep.

Without sleep, you will for-sure go insane. Try and get your work done ahead of time so that you can get some sleep each night and not have to worry about cramming. You'll have the occasional all nighter here and there, but budget your time so that it doesn't become a 3 times a week issue.

There is no perfect science to staying completely sane in college, and that's okay. Just make sure that along with all the studying and crazy nights you have, you still remember to take care of yourself.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
