How To Avoid The Gainesville Plague

728

With the cold weather approaching and the stress of midterms still looming in the air, University of Florida students are beginning to experience symptoms of what has come to be known as “the Gainesville plague.” Ranging from a sore throat with a cough, to a stuffed up nose and sneezing, this illness has become a common concern among most Gainesville residents. If you have been lucky enough to avoid contracting any of these symptoms, now is the time to begin taking precautionary measures. Even I, who thought had an immune system made of steel, am beginning to develop a cough and a sore throat.

According to WebMD.com, there are many ways that one can get sick even while taking precautions. Some people are actually sick before they even realize it. “We could be exposed to the illness before the person who has it shows any symptoms,” according to WebMD.com. While you may think you are in the clear because someone, such as your roommate, seems fine, they could be sick and not even know it. Also, with the stress and sleepless nights resulting from the recent midterms, eventually your body’s immune system will be defeated, and you will be more susceptible to getting sick. However, the cost of staying healthy can be expensive, especially on a college budget. Lucky for you, there are a lot of easy ways to stay healthy and they will not break the bank. Here are my top three.

1. Get plenty of sleep. Now that midterms are over and you can begin to get back on a regular schedule, try to establish a decent sleeping schedule, as well. It is recommended that college students get an average of eight hours of sleep each night (WebMD.com). If this amount of sleep isn’t doable for you, then napping is a must.

2. Drink lots of water. Try and stay away from a lot of soda or other dehydrating drinks. By staying hydrated, and drinking a lot of water, you can keep your immune system clean and healthy to better your chances of fighting off any illnesses.

3. Replace your morning coffee with hot tea. The morning is a prime time to start strengthening your immune system. It is common to wake up in the morning and have symptoms of a sore throat. This can be easily removed by having hot tea with a small amount of honey and, if you are feeling adventurous, maybe some lemon juice. This will soothe your throat and also open up your nasal passages, leaving you ready to conquer the day.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
