Anxiety is a mental disorder too, but I don't mean anxiety every now and then; I mean constant anxiety. Constant feeling of worry is not healthy and is classified as a mental illness.
These feelings of anxiety and panic interfere with daily activities, are difficult to control, are out of proportion to the actual danger and can last a long time. Examples of anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder (social phobia), specific phobias and separation anxiety disorder. You can have more than one anxiety disorder. Sometimes anxiety results from a medical condition that needs treatment.
I have anxiety. I bite my nails when I am anxious. The stress of it makes my upper back hurt. It's a constant battle I deal with every day, and I know that I am not the only one dealing with anxiety disorder. Some days feel like they are dreams and aren't real.
Medication helps, but it's not a cure all. I take medication, and it still feels like it's not enough, but I have had a lot of stressful situations lately. However, there are ways to help cope with the disorder.
1. Lavender
Anything with a strong lavender scent helps calm you down. Body washes with lavender will help you calm down enough to where you can fall asleep, or at least, calm you down enough to prepare to sleep. You can purchase roll on oils from Walgreens. You can also find diffusers and other essential oils. Bath and Body Works has a great stress relief lotion. If you want the lavender one, buy the purple one.
2. Peppermint
Peppermint like lavender affects the nervous system and can calm you down. I'm not sure if eating peppermints helps, but I know the smell of it helps.
3. Exercise
Develop a routine so that you're physically active most days of the week. Exercise is a powerful stress reducer. It may improve your mood and help you stay healthy. Start out slowly and gradually increase the amount and intensity of your activities.
4. Avoid drugs
These substances can cause or worsen anxiety. If you can't quit on your own, see your doctor or find a support group to help you.
5. Eat healthy
Healthy eating — such as focusing on vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fish — may be linked to reduced anxiety, but more research is needed.
Anxiety is very real for people. They are not after attention when they say they have an anxiety disorder. From someone who has it, they just want to be normal.
