This week I chose to address a new fad, the Hover Board Segways.
No, I am not talking about the Marty McFly High Top Nike Strap-In Hover Board from Back to the Future. These are basically smaller Segways with no handle bar system.
If you want it to move forward or reverse you simply lean in that direction. I have seen a lot of pretty cool videos of people riding them around, and I have even spotted one or two people riding them around campus.
These hover boards require you to be able to balance well and there can be no abrupt shifts in weight. Due to this, there are some absolutely hilarious crash videos all over social media.
I feel like I see a new video every single day. As funny as these crashes are, you have to think, how useful are these things?
How well do these take bumps if you are riding it around campus? How many times do you have to get off and pick it up then put it back down and get back on it?
I mean, I’ll give it to you, they are cool looking, but I have seen some prices—anywhere from $169 to $400. As cool as they are, I just do not think they are worth $400. By all means, if you do not care about the money, get one to play with.
My take on these hover boards is that they are a fad, and that is all they are. They will fade out just like the first Segways did. Also, I think they kind of look ridiculous when you are trying to do normal and every day functions on one of them.
I will keep saving my pennies for when they release a real hover board and I will strap up those High Top Nikes with pride.
I have faith in Doc Brown, that a real hover board is coming soon.
