As the spring semester zips by, housing selection for next year is almost upon us. Many will graduate from living uphill to down towards Broad Street in Greek houses, interest houses, apartments...and whatever 94 Broad is supposed to be. In an effort to aid the confused who are contemplating their future housing options I have put together a brief, non-exhaustive list evaluating many of the housing options found on Broad Street.
Happy hunting!
PAC House
Located on the corner of College and Broad, the "Philanthropists at Colgate" have historically taken up residence in the former DKE house at 110 Broad. PAC House is known for using their frat house set-up to throw
Pros: extra decent rooms, epic common areas, community kitchen, super clutch nearby cruiser stops
Cons: you'll have to be added to another GroupMe, definitely haunted by the souls of DKE pledges, ridiculously sensitive emergency exit doors whose alarms may or may not have ruined everyone's nights last Friday
Interfaith House
Located on the corner of College and Broad that opposes PAC House, Interfaith is another staple interest house on Broad Street. Whatever group occupies the house at 104 Broad, their interest traditionally revolves around wellness living.
Pros: spiritually calming space, hosts interesting discussions and free food events
Cons: aggressive Phi Gamma Delta branding of everything in the building left from former residents
CAH
The "Creative Arts House" has been a host to many successful campus events. Its exterior may be one of the only standing examples of an attempted integration of brutalism and Art Deco architecture in a college residence.
Pros: living in a community of creatively minded individuals may inspire your more artistic drives
Cons: being converted into a "Residential Commons Annex," likely due to
94 Broad
Is it an
Pros: pool table, piano, excessively large common areas
Cons: might actually just be an extension of Phi Tau
Bunche House
The Ralph J. Bunche House at 80 Broad Street is an
Pros: beautiful library, intellectually stimulating conversations, safe space for the marginalized and underrepresented, large kitchen
Cons: PC culture, constant reminder of your privilege, no real refuge from the current state of social and cultural unrest of our nation
The Loj
70 Broad Street, also known as the
Pros: shared commitment to environmentalism reduces house's carbon footprint
Cons: often difficult to figure out to whom all of the Nalgenes/flannels belong
Class of 1934 House
Currently, the Class of 1934 House is the makeshift residence of La Casa Pan Latina-Americana as their former house is being reconstructed to become the new home of Career Services.
Pros: easy to give directions to: "the big red one across from the Colgate University sign"
Cons: not close enough to downtown to be convenient, not close enough to campus to be convenient
All fraternities
Pros: living with your brothers, great party venue, endless supply of women's coats that have been haphazardly ditched by their owners when leaving a party
Cons: living with your brothers, feet sticking to the floor because of the beer that has seeped into the wood over time, can never really be confident of how clean something is
All sororities
Pros: living with your sisters, immediate access to food, easy to borrow clothes and put together costumes for theme parties
Cons: living with your sisters, you're always somehow in the way of a photo-op, easy to get distracted by always having a success to celebrate or crisis to mediate
