What It Means To Be Recruitment Ready

It's definitely not just about the sister pics that happen before, trust me

Are you recruitment ready? It is recruitment season and you are not the one rushing anymore, you're recruiting. As one of the 1200 girls rushing, you walk into all these fabulous chapters and see them all decorated and smelling wonderful; not really quite sure how they manage to do it all.

Fast forward a year later, and now rather than trying to find your home, you are helping one thousand other girls help find theirs. Let me tell you, I have a whole new appreciation for recruitment after my first season being on the other side.

You really will never know how much hard work goes into something until you're the one doing it; this applies to all jobs in the world, not just recruitment for sororities. As time goes on and recruitment seasons come and go, girls just become more competitive, so what this means is that everyone works even harder to make their chapter stand out and shine.

Recruitment is a beast, a beautiful one, but still a beast nevertheless.

Weeks of preparation and training, two weeks of actual recruitment with 19-20 hour days, recruitment is definitely not a joke.

This year, spring 2018 recruitment at Syracuse University has about 1200 girls going through the recruitment process, each woman special in her own way. Our job? Finding the 60-70 girls out of those 1200 that exhibit the qualities we look for in each of our respective chapters.

Recruitment weeks themselves are divided up into 4 different rounds, with bid day technically being the 5th. Each chapter exhibits what they have to offer from their sisterhood events to their philanthropies all the way to future connections they would be able to help you with.

Each round has its own outfit, set of songs, decorations, and food. The youngest girls rushing eagerly to find their homes, the youngest pledge class in the chapter eager to find their little, the middle pledge class in the chapter excited to add to their family trees as well, and the seniors of the house sentimental each day as they say a bittersweet goodbye to their last recruitment season.

Art committees pull all-nighters transforming the houses into different types of wonderlands to impress the potential new members. So, what is it all for?

Once the process of recruitment is over and bid day comes, you end up with your newest pledge class. Girls make their connections, find their forever friends and families, all because every chapter pulled a 6 am to 4:30 am to make it all happen.

When recruitment is over you truly hate to see it go, but love to watch it leave. With potential new members at hand, the fun of meeting new people has only just begun and suddenly the hours it took to become recruitment ready, were all worth it.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
