Coming to college is a really big and transitional time for everyone. It's a new world, with new people, and new experiences. I didn't know who I would meet and what kind of relationships I would have with people when I got here, but here I am and the people I have met are some of the most important people in my life. I love them all, and their personalities and our relationships have given me so much throughout my first and second years of college. I hope everyone has the chance to make friends like I have.
1. The girl who is nothing like you.
She was my first best friend in college, and has been there for me through everything. We spent every waking moment together for awhile and it did a lot for me as a person. We balance each other in a way that I am not sure other people even understand. She is outgoing, silly, positive, and has helped me find enjoyment in life that I never would have sought out for on my own. I am much more introverted naturally, serious, and cynical, and help her find a different kind of path in her life. Because of our friendship, we have both done things outside of our comfort zones, and that's part of what college is, moving outside of where you're comfortable with to become more that what you ever thought you could be.
2. The girl who's personality is much more similar to yours.
No, we're not the same person by any means, but our personalities are much more similar than that of any of my other friends, and it's great. We find we have the same interests, and usually want to do the same things when the weekend rolls around. We make each other comfortable, and don't have to spend much effort to maintain our friendship. Everything is easy and simple and I love it. The funny thing is we didn't even like each other at first, probably in part because we are so similar. That'll show us both to be less judgmental next time (which apparently we both also have in common).
3. The guy who is an asshole.
He is actually a jerk. He makes fun of me whether I'm in the best mood or the worst mood, but I love him for it. He can always make me feel better and can always call me on my b.s., and I can't even be mad at him because that's just the way he is. He has no reservations about telling me when I'm being silly, whether towards him, someone else, or something else, and I can always count on him to let me know when I need to get myself in check.
4. The guy who is always there for me.
He's been there for me in ways I never would have thought anyone could be there for me. From going with me to get my car fixed (twice), to hearing about some of the worst things that are going on in my life, he is literally always there, and he has no idea how much I love and appreciate him for it. I feel bad that he's the one who often gets stuck hearing about something when I just need someone to talk to, but I always choose him because he knows exactly what to tell me to make me feel better, or to make the situation better.
5. The friend who isn't in the same friend group as all of my other friends.
Their roll in my life is just as important as that of all my other friends. This person offers a different perspective sometimes on the same situations and is always willing to just listen. I wish I got to hang out with this person more than I do, but every time we do get to hang out is so great and appreciated. This person is such a rock in my life, I love them, and I don't know what I would do without them.
6. The friend who challenges me.
This person has views on life, school, government, friendship, literally everything different from mine, but they're still someone who I feel has become very important in my life. They have pushed me to see things in a different perspective, and has even made some points and arguments that are so valid and important that I've changed the way I think overall. They have helped me to become patient and to grow as a person, and I am glad they are in my life for that and for many more reasons. They have taken on an important role that is sometimes difficult in friendships, but we make it work and that's what matters.
The friends we make in college are important for many reasons, most of which because we spend our best time and our worst times with them. Even though I am only a sophomore in college, I honestly believe that the friends I have made are my friends for life. I hope everyone can be as lucky in their relationships in college as I have been because it is something I am extremely thankful for in my life.
