On Monday, April 20, 2015 John Stamos, known to "Full House" friends as “Uncle Jesse,” announced on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" that the show was coming back. I (like many others) was ecstatic, but I also had my reservations. I remember staying up late in middle school to watch "Full House" reruns on TV and I did not want the reboot to retract from the original show. "Fuller House," featuring (almost) all of the old cast members, premiered on Netflix alone on Feb. 26, 2016. I watched all 13 and I am currently eagerly awaiting season 2 to come out but until then here’s an honest review of "Fuller House" season 1.
First I would like to address a topic that every "Full House" fan has: Uncle Jesse. John Stamos. He does not age.
Have mercy, Uncle Jesse!
"Fuller House" features an almost identical storyline. A single mom, Candace Cameron (DJ Fuller), who has just recently lost her husband moves into a new house with her three boys. The boys are all very close in (if not the same) ages as the Tanner girls when Fuller house premiered in 1987. Though she tries her best, DJ is unable to meet the needs of her three boys and her responsibilities as a veterinarian on her own. Jodie Sweeten (Stephanie Tanner) steps up and moves in with DJ, along with Andrea Barber (Kimmy Gibbler) and her daughter. The antics of this new dysfunctional family is much like the Tanner family. The show even includes "then and now" scenes where the new show mirrors a scene from the old show. This creativity greatly adds to the authenticity of the show and even made me tear up.
Another question on many people's minds is this: What about Mary Kate & Ashley? Can they really do a new series without Michele Tanner? The answer is yes and they do it in the best way possible. Regardless of the reason, the Olsen twins decided not to return for the reboot, and the rest of the cast and the producers will not let their absence be missed or forgotten. Shade is thrown toward the twins through references to their New York fashion line.
The show is full of loving adventures with both heartfelt and heartbreaking moments. The romance between Lori Loughlin (Rebecca Katsopolis) and John Stamos is alive and well. Their sons Nicky and Alex (Blake and Dylan Toumy-Wilhout) are in their sixth — yes sixth — year of college. There is a tear-jerking heart-to-heart between DJ and Stephanie, sibling struggles between the Fuller boys, and enough family antics to go around. The Fullers feel like a real family. They struggle day-to-day just like other families. They get mad at each other and make up. And what family doesn't have a cow wander into their kitchen every now and then?
The reboot that I had mixed emotions about has made me laugh and cry. It is shows such as "Fuller House" that make you want to really appreciate every moment in life. Season 1 was great and I eagerly await Season 2. More Fullers, more mishaps, more laughs, more tears and most importantly, more John Stamos.
