While in America, most of us live mostly black and white lives, working, paying bills and going to bed at night, so many countries are not as lucky as us. Honduras is home to the second most dangerous city in the entire world. This is because of political unrest, poverty and lack of education. Honduras has not had the luck of the draw since the get go. According to Transparency International, Honduras is the most politically corrupt nation in Central America. Exploitation of Honduras's resources has led to their poverty, particularly in the banana trade. The differences in income in Honduras between the rich and the poor is greater than that of failed African countries. This is because of the way the economic system is set up, in that the rich make the policies so they can keep more of their money. But most of all, the education system in Honduras has failed its children for years and years, it that teachers are not paid, children are rarely taught anything substantial and usually end up dropping out in order to work to support their families.
An organization called Students Helping Honduras is making strides to change this cycle of poverty for the future generations of Honduras. Through donations and college aged volunteers, schools are built in San Pedro Sula, the second murder capital in the world. With the creation of schools, the students have an adequate structure in which to learn. Through education, these children will be able to have substantial jobs, and some even have the opportunity to go to college abroad through scholarship programs.
Students Helping Honduras has built well over 1,000 schools and employs locals to help direct volunteers in building the schools and helping translate English and Spanish. The volunteers have the chance to interact with families and play with the children while building the schools. This organization provides 100% of its profits to building schools. I am planning on going to Honduras with SHH in early January with Appalachian State University. I encourage all of you to keep Honduras in your heart, whether it's providing donations or simply spreading information, anything counts. If you want to donate, my fundraising page is https://www.fundaround.com/ceci/2016-08-10/winter--ii--2017/600bda4fbac9286e0da59a66a3195c26d79e44f9/ and you can contribute to the organization itself at http://shhkids.org/donate/ para los niños!
