After being in college for almost a month, I’ve managed to precisely determine what it really means to be a college student, and what you leave behind. These are some of the things I’ve missed the most and can’t wait to get back to after being shipped home in December.
- Freedom
Not having a car brings back memories to my sophomore year of high school, memories that involved being stuck places until I got a ride, memories I’d rather not relive. Not having a car means no running errands, going shopping, going on road trips, or going on spontaneous adventures. This limits fun to long walks around campus, going to the caf, and walking to the only coffeeshop in the neighborhood. As much as I don’t miss California gas prices, I miss driving.
2. Food
Cafeteria food can never compare to the freshness and greatness as a home-cooked meal. I’ve never had so many varieties of fried chicken and mashed potatoes, the Alabama cafeteria food standard. Even when you try to eat healthy and get some veggies, chances are, they’re half cooked. When it comes to making food for large amounts of people, quantity really is valued over quality.
3.Family
Nothing beats having a group of people that genuinely care about how your day is going, will make food for you, or do your laundry. Its nice having people to talk to who aren’t as stressed out as you and can give you advice from a different perspective. Also, living without my four legged siblings greeting me when I come home from school is rough. Life without dogs has been brutal, every dog within eyesight gets petted, I feel confident that I’ve met every dog on campus.
With over three months till winter break, its going to be hard being over a thousand miles from home. College work is rough, and thats when you figure out not to take life at home for granted.
