Wherever life takes you, you always make friends that come and go. College friends, summer camp friends, online friends, and so many more people come in and out of your life. But there are always those one or two people that will be there through at all. Your hometown best friends know you better than anyone else, and it should be clear by now that they aren’t going anywhere. And here is why.
They Know The Quirks of Your Hometown
You can talk to your college friends about where you’re from all you want. They can visit you and see all of your favorite spots in person. But for some reason, no one will truly understand your home the way you and your hometown BFFs do. They know all of the back roads leading to your high school, the best pizza joints, and where everyone will be on a Friday night.
The Awkward Years
Middle school, high school, and even sometimes elementary school if you were really unlucky (me). These are the times in our lives we refer to as the “awkward years.” And there are those one or two special people who have witnessed it all. Your first time experimenting with makeup, your first group date, your first horrible kiss with that boy with the braces. And even though they can make fun of you for it, they won’t! Just kidding. They totally will, and that’s the beauty of it.
You’ve Seen Them Ugly Cry (and Vice Versa)
Remember when you got a D on that Algebra test? Or when your first serious boyfriend broke your heart? And when he broke it again? The ugly tears came out. They just kept on coming, and you were there to hand them the tissues—and they did the same for you. No matter the situation, you welcomed each other in and embraced the Kim Kardashian-esque ugly cry.
Three Words: Late Night Drives
The last summer before I came to college was full of these, and they were some of the best nights of my life with the best people having the best conversations. There is nothing like putting in your favorite home-made mix CD, rolling down the windows and driving through your hometown with your best friends at your side.
Crushes, Exes, and Currents
As much as you want to forget that you dated that person, you did. It sucked. But you did it and they were there for it. Your hometown best friends know all of your exes, the code names used for all of your crushes (past and present) and even though you may have parted, you still keep each other up to date on your love lives.
The Endless Archive of Embarrassing Photos
The amount of snap chat screenshots you have on your phone is unbelievable and maybe (just maybe) a little unhealthy. But you’ll never get rid of them. Mostly because when you miss them, you can just pull one of the hundreds of them up but also, there’s always a blackmail opportunity out there.
Binge Eating
Have some ice cream after dinner. Then go out to the nearest gas station and get some sour patch kids, peanut butter crackers, and more ice cream. Take a break. Then…more ice cream. Binge eating with your best friends from home is nothing to be ashamed of. It’s a tradition! And personally, my favorite one.
When You’re With Them, You’re Home
WOW. That’s cheesy. But it’s true. Just because they’re your hometown best friends doesn’t mean you only see them when you’re home. If they come visit you at school, or you visit them, you automatically feel like you are home and it’s like no time had passed at all between freshman year of high school and now.
