Where is Home?
Since I was a little kid home was always my safe haven. The place I could go to every night and escape the world. Home is where you’re with your family and the place in which you can feel comfortable. It’s the place that has that certain room to calm you down. Home will always have a special place in your heart that nothing else can replace, but going to college provides you with another home. Although this home may be very small, require you to wear shower shoes, and doesn’t have your Mom or Dad down the hall from you, it still holds a special place in your heart.
Starting out my freshman year, I walked into my room and thought, “Wow, I am going to hate living in this small of a room,” and I was kind of right. It most definitely took some getting used to, but after awhile I began to like it. It was my second home, another place for me to escape the outside world. Adjusting to life in a dorm room was a challenge. Some days I would sit there and think to myself, “I can never call this place my home” or end up calling my Mom or Dad saying I was homesick. Don’t get me wrong, I still do this today, but I’ve come to learn that my dorm room is a different kind of home, a good one though.
While you may think how you could call this place your home when your family isn’t there and you have to share a bathroom with more than just your two brothers. The one thing I learned is you now have another family. A family who doesn’t exactly know every last detail of your life, like your real family may, but these people get you and understand you and are also in the same exact position. Moving away is hard, but creating bonds with people and creating a room you feel comfortable in makes it a little bit easier. Both of these homes will hold special places in your heart. One may have a stronger connection to you than the other but they will both always be home.
