Thanksgiving break or any break from school is the time where we usually go home and reunite with relatives and our past. Time to go home for the holidays and see what the gang has been up to!
If you get lucky enough to make it to your upper-classman status in college (assuming the weight of being a college student hasn’t crushed your spirit yet) you understand that adulthood is creeping up on you and is waiting for you to take a number, fall in line, and start working. So when you come home for any holiday break all you want to do is just sit down and relax and not worry about life punching your fun card and taking it away. You wont escape it at all though, the reality of it will set in when you meet up with all your old friends for some what you thought was going to be “just a couple of drinks”. Everyone is going to ask what you’re up to and what your plans are. “What are you doing after college?” they will ask. You’ll say what you hope you’ll be doing, but come on, you don’t actually know a damn thing. Then you’ll found out that your friend landed some internship with Google or something so out of reach and you’re just thinking about how you binge watched Shameless on Netflix this past week. You have your priorities and that’s cool. No ones judging. Well everyone’s judging. But it’s okay!
Then comes Thanksgiving and you sit with your family and gain 10 pounds in one sitting. It’s the holiday season though, so that’s bound to happen regardless. Your grandparents ask you if you’ve found that “special someone” yet as you load up your second plate. If you’re lucky someone will mention you’ve put a bit of weight on but that you still look good. If you’re really lucky their might even be a mild uproar and a pretty solid argument will break out at thanksgiving dinner (which we have at 2 p.m. every year for some reason). You get to sit at the adult table too, look at you go! But remember with the privilege of being at the adult table demands that you come prepared with adult conversation skills. Bring up that election, you wont. Every body is up in your business but hey that’s what family is for. If they don’t ask, they don’t actually care. So be thankful for that.
You love coming home and seeing everyone but it does somewhat make you realize that yes another year has gone by and yes you are getting older and yes you should grow up, but no you will not. Not just yet. Besides you’re a fourth quarter player anyways. Don’t even sweat it though. You’re home for the holidays, you’ll be back to school in no time. Back to the hustle of balancing a social life, classes, friends, a shaky sleep schedule, a healthy lifestyle, a non healthy lifestyle, and any other extra curricular activities you decided to take on because you are brave soul.
