Home Is Not A Place Anymore

It's a feeling.

As you grow up, you memorize your address and know exactly what your house looks like. While you continue to think that this structure is your home, you begin to think a little differently about it. You begin to think of it as just a building and the people apart of that building make it a home.

While you go off to college, this feeling hits all too hard. You leave home and it isn't exactly the same feeling. You feel homesick and miss that feeling you once had while being at home. This continues for a couple days until you begin to meet new people and become close with them. Then the hint of that feeling comes back and you realize it wasn't the place that made it home, but the people you were with.

You suddenly find yourself confiding in these people and you see yourself finding this new place to be home. You have all those feelings you once had. Every place you go to with them seems to be home and you never feel homesick with them.

When you get a boyfriend, you first have feelings of nervousness, but even in those feelings, they develop into feelings of home. You spend all your time with him and those feelings of nervousness turn into the feeling of home. Without him by your side, you get that homesick feeling all over again. It's like you aren't fully yourself if you're not with him.

Every time you hang out it's like you haven't seen each other in weeks and you feel at home again. When he isn't with you, you feel like something is missing and your heart aches. When everything is perfect, is when you two are alone and just sit in silence. You both know the feeling is mutual, but yet don't have to say anything to each other.

You've figured out that all that time you spent thinking your home was just a building, suddenly changed in an instant. Your feeling of homesickness only leaves for a short time when you aren't with him anymore. You learned that when aren't with this person, everything is different.

You could travel all across the world to all these different places, none of them will be even close to feeling like home unless you're with that special person. This is the person that makes you feel so comfortable in any situation and can keep you safe. You've never been to any of these places before, but suddenly they all feel like home when you're with him.

You can barely go a day without seeing him and when you do, the day seems to drag on and on. Once you've found this person in your life, you know that you could never go back. This is your forever home.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
