Guys always say that movies have ruined women's expectation in our relationships. We expect knights in shining armor who will sweep us off of our feet and are disappointed when we don't have those things. But in reality, it's not the relationship that has been spoiled by movies or TV shows, it's the breakup!
At the end of The Notebook, Allie comes back to Noah who pinned after her when they broke up and we have the famous "it's not going to be easy, it's going to be really hard and we're going to have to work at it every day, but I want to do that because I want you" quote. Here is a man who ended his relationship when they were young, longed for her for years and then professed his love to her as she was leaving him for her fiance. Swoon worthy, right?
Or what about One Tree Hill? Peyton and Lucas. After a basketball game, post-break-up, he professes his love to her in front of God and everybody telling her that he "wants her by his side when all of his dreams come true." Spoiler alert: they end up together.
Or the classic 1989 film Say Anything when Lloyd stands under Diane's window playing their song from a boombox he's holding over his head after their breakup!
Honestly, I wish it wasn't true. Nothing is harder than getting over a breakup and it's even harder to move on when you're looking out your window at night hoping he pulls up and knocks on your door to tell you made a horrible mistake. Chances are, he did make a mistake because you're awesome, but chances are even higher that you'll never hear that from him. We have got to love ourselves enough to allow our hearts to move on. We don't live in a Hallmark movie, this life is not a fairytale and yeah, you're going to fall really hard more than once before someone proves to you it was all worth it. But do yourself a favor, start being okay with the idea of being alone again. No one is coming to stand under your window with a boom box, he's not coming to beg for your forgiveness and honestly, if he has to beg for it in the first place, does he really deserve it? No.
Take heart in knowing your worth and if someone can walk away from you so easily, you don't need them anyway. Anyone worth having will never put themselves in a position to lose you or have to win you back. Be the star of your own movie and stop waiting for someone to walk back into your life and rescue you from your heartache, you're the only one who can do that for you.
