Finally, Hollywood is getting it right! The lead for Disney's new live-action movie, "Mulan" is going to be played by Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu. Yifei is an Asian actress who was born in Wuhan, China. I couldn't be any happier knowing that the character Mulan is going to be played by someone who actually looks like her, instead of Emma Stone (no disrespect to Emma Stone). It just gets pretty annoying at times watching movies being played by actors who look nothing like the characters they are supposed to play.
If the actor also has to use makeup to be able to match the character, it will just make it harder for me to actually get into the movie and enjoy it. For example, the biopic "Nina" starring Zoe Saldana pretty much broke my heart when it was released.
I'll eventually get over this, but it will always be a pet peeve of mine.
Being a huge comic book fan and remembering how the characters looked in the comics, also makes it difficult for me not to complain if the actor who is playing the characters does not match the comic book version. For example, I thought it was unnecessary for Michael B. Jordan to play Johnny Storm in Josh Trank's "Fantastic Four" movie.
I'm definitely an advocate for more diversity in Hollywood films, but they didn't have to do it this way; especially since Johnny Storm is known for having blues eyes and blonde hair. In my opinion, a great way to make things more diverse is to create films that actually star characters of color. I think many of us would appreciate seeing a movie about the superhero Black Lightning. I definitely would.
Going back on topic, Mulan being played by Yifei, I'm sure, will be inspirational and memorable. This is because there aren't many American movies that feature Asian people as the main characters or protagonists. They are usually just fighting beside the (most of the time caucasian) hero like in the movie "Pacific Rim", or they also end up dying like the character Han Lue in the movie, "Fast & Furious 6".
I loved both movies, but I couldn't help but have noticed these two things about the Asian characters in these movies. Hollywood has came a very long way when it comes to presenting people of color in films, such as no longer having white actors dress up in blackface or put on stereotypical Asian features. However, I believe that there are still issues Hollywood should fix when it comes to presenting people of color in movies.
