Holiday Happenings In The Pacific Northwest

Are you the kind of person who wishes to check out some places over winter break but don't know where to start? Or are you one of the people who wishes they did more exciting things over break than sit on the couch watching "Santa Clause" movies? Trust me, I've been there. Lately, I have been exploring some cool events and places in Washington that would be fun to check out! I hope this list makes you want to explore this holiday break!

1. Zoo Lights.

At the Woodland and Point Defiance Zoos, they decorate their entire zoo in lights! What fun it would be to walk with the family or your significant other through the zoo lights.

2. Lights Maze.

In Vancouver, there is the LARGEST light maze open to the public. Of course, you have to buy tickets, but it looks like a blast. Get some shopping done at the Christmas market as well as walking through the long maze. At least you won't get too lost, like you would in a corn maze.

3. Northwest Trek.

If you're the outdoorsy type and really want to see some wildlife this holiday season, check out the Northwest Trek near Tacoma. You're basically on a Pacific Northwest safari ride. On December 29-30, they are having their Winter Wildland!

4. Christmas in Leavenworth.

Oh, Leavenworth: The one time of year where there are lights and Christmas all around you. Go get a bratwurst and a beer at a pub and do some shopping!

5. The classic "Nutcracker" ballet.

Come on, who doesn't love going to see the "Nutcracker" every Christmas season? It is a timeless classic. I just love seeing the Mouse King get defeated every time.

6. The Jingle Bell Run.

Ey yo, where are my marathoners at?! This is perfect for you guys. Just strap on a Santa hat, a red tutu with bells and start running. It's the perfect way to keep fit over the holidays. There is one in Tacoma and one in Seattle!

7. Food Truck Festival.

Where are my food gurus at? If you love food, then the food truck festival is for you. Eat one meal at a different food truck, or just eat at every food truck. Ugh, this is making me hungry!

8. Craft fairs.

What better way to look for different ornaments or some cute Christmas goodies than at a craft fair? If you look around your city, there are signs all around advertising dates when there will be a craft fair. Go get marshmallow guns and have a battle with your SO.

9. The Beer Festival in Portland, OR.

Over 21? Go check out the beer festival and try over 20 different beers and IPAs with food at the St. Johns Winter Beer Fest.

10. Go to a wine tasting.

In Portland at Uncorked, you can try eight local wines with appetizers and chocolate. Hello, food and wine! That is like an awesome night.

Have holiday breaks where memories are made and pictures can be the evidence of these events. I hope you will check some of these places out and have a wonderful break with family, friends, a SO or all of them together!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
