Hello?
It's amazing to see how far our society has come. We live in a period of time that surpasses that of our ancestors in many aspects. We live with one of the highest possible longevity and quality of living. But all of this, is to what extent? When you walk into a train car, when you sit down to grab a bite, when you are walking down the sidewalk, take a look around you. What do you see? A world that looks through a screen and is running low on battery.
I believe as a society, it is disheartening to see how technology has destroyed our lives. We are all absorbed in our phones, and laptops, and any other electronic, that it governs the way we live. When we feel uncomfortable, we pull out our phones. When we go home, we flip open our laptops. When we have nothing to do, we turn on the TV.
What happened to having some time to our thoughts? Taking the time to appreciate the other things. Walking down the sidewalk to enjoy the air and sound of birds chirping. What's a paperback book? What's a tree? You should come up here, the view is beautiful (Flipped).
In our current generation and society we are all consumed by social media. We ruin the essence of what we are doing when we stop to post it. We may not commit to something simply for ourselves, but because we may need "likes" and "favourites". We disconnect with the real world, and connect into our fabricated one. We are all so focused on staying in our comfort zone, that we never try to do anything beyond it.
And when there's too much time on our hands, on our commute, on our wait. We reach into our pockets and unlock ourselves into a virtual reality.
We pull out our phones for any situation. Pausing life to try and capture every single minute. Losing the moment to skim through social media. Forgetting about life, to post about our life. It is like we are on autopilot, when the best part about flying, is enjoying the ride.
I'm not saying technology, is a bad thing. As a matter of fact, my phone and laptop are pretty important to me. It's much of my thoughts and gives me ways to decorate my time and space. It is what I use to explore more of what I can't currently get to. It is a way to see the world in the life and eyes, of another.
But there's an extent to all of this.
A few days without YouTube or Facebook or Instagram or anything unproductive, can really change your life. There is so much more to our lives. Catch yourself, once in awhile and break free from the strings and connections that tangle you down.
Technology is also wonderful in the ways it has changed everyone and anyone's life. When it's hot outside, you flip a switch and cold air blows out. Yeah, that was someone's crazy idea that eventually became an air conditioner. Every single thing in our life, was made to be, because some idiot thought outside of what was possible, and dreamed it for us.
Prosthetic limbs to give a second chance to those unfortunate enough. Machines to record and monitor someone's condition to ensure their safety and well-being. Medicine to give another life to those who were originally destined to pass earlier. They are all the savior to our demise. The second chances and miracles we may have never dreamed of.
And it keeps our worlds collided. To keep in touch with people across seas and across time. To stay connected with someone, without the worry of the unknown. Call me old fashioned, but I still enjoy letter writing. It has allowed us to reach across the world. To lend a ear. To lend a hand.
It gave a voice for those left behind, it gave a forum to those forgotten. It makes us feel included in a world so alone. To have unity and support in times of needs. To raise our arms, and give awareness to those who need it most. A call for spare change to create a world without fear.
So here we are at my phone again. Hold on, I just got a text message. Yeah, I'll have to talk to you later.
Who knows where the world may take us next. Just remember to look up every now and again to enjoy the ride. The stills of your window can only show so much.
