Mixed emotions overfilling my body: stress, anxiety, excitement, and overwhelming joy. I couldn't believe I was about to embark on my very first vacation alone. Yes, I would be arriving to a family member's home, however, I was going to a different country, to my lindo Guanajuato, Mexico. The trip would be made solely by me, no one would else would be boarding that plane but me, no "Mom, where do we go," "Mom, watch over my bags," or "Mom, wake me up when the plane is here." I had to do it all solita.
Upon arrival I couldn't help feeling proud of my self and my big niña pants, since I had made it safely. That meant the adventures could finally begin! Even though I went to the same city that would see me grow up each and every year, it seemed completely new. I was experiencing the food, the smells, the scenery with a new pair of lenses. No longer ones of a little girl, but those of a educated, recently graduated, working woman.
One of the best encounters during this mini vacay was no other than the food. I had had great restaurants throughout my life in Guanajuato, but this time it was my time to explore. I tried so many amazing things! From the breakfast jugos, the quesadilla brunches, the garbanzo snacks, to the taco dinners or the ice cream desserts. Seriously, anything I tried was scrumptious. Some of the best things were the drinks in plastic baggies and the exotic fruits. They tasted as fresh as the orchard they came from.
Now, the most breathtaking places my eyes sought were the old remains of the past. The neoclassic architecture with the Spanish touch, the vibrant colors, and the livelihood of the city. You could sense the diversity within the culture, and could see the art in just a simple building or by going to the local jardín. Every day it was filled with food vendors, kids running everywhere, and the wistful sun shimmering.
There was one thing that I will not be able forget. The sense of all the amor that was given to me. A day would not go by without that heartfelt hug, that genuine conversation, or the small gestures of compassion. Days were filled with memories of the past with the neighbors, and hopes of a better future for the young ones.
This experience, cheesy or not, helped me reassure myself. Before I left, I was in turmoil with life decisions, and overwhelmed. After taking the spontaneous decision to make this trip, I was able to experience first hand my sense of independence. I was able to realize that I was in control, and thanks to myself I was able to undergo such an amazing adventure.
Gracias familia, y mi lindo Guanajuato por todo. No los podre olvidar y espero regresar pronto.
