Even Though History Is In the Past, It's an Important Stepping Stone For Our Future

A couple of days ago, I was at a library. I saw artifacts there that were old, very old. I was there for a class, looking and holding books that were centuries older than anyone I know. The pure bliss of holding on to a book, something that is ancient, divine with respect to what it offers, was beyond imagination. Now, most of you all would say that we see things like these every day: museums, churches, old relics, paintings, and buildings. A book, however, is very special.

History defines itself as a prerequisite to human existence. For the longest time, we have wondered about prehistoric things, trying to unveil items such as cave drawings, landmark sites, tools, and utilities used by our ancient ancestors. We try to decipher the code, which seems to be beyond our time. Yet, every day, I hear hundreds of people say history is a waste of time. Now, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but when it comes to history, there is no agreement whatsoever, that is unless it could answer all of our questions. History is mere speculation and assumptions from our part to access what happened at a certain time or age.

But, why an article on history? Why even bother to change people's opinion on history? People, when it comes to history, have a crude and discordant opinion. So, why bother - because these people don't understand the value of history.

History, as I previously mentioned, is the prerequisite to human existence. We have strived to find answers about where we come from, yet, we could think of it another way. What if the people before us were thinking the same thing? Cavemen that drew on caves were trying to make sense of their existence. What if all philosophies about aliens are so the man does not feel so lonely? I mean, we don't really know what lies beyond our galaxy. But, we seem to be creating stories, calling them myths, legends, comics, about species that are similar, yet possess extraordinary abilities.

We, as a generation, have come to despise history. For what it's worth, we are here because of it. Experience settles us in the belief that we are better than our predecessors. We have accomplished great things. But, a true lover of this time, this world would understand that things don't lead up to our current age. We call America the greatest nation on the face of the earth. But, our roots came from the slums and rejects of the British Colonials. We admire our history only to the point to where it aids us in our biased belief. We fail to look beyond our thoughtful discrepancies.

We need to learn to look beyond the box. We want to look for extraterrestrial life but don't want to improve our standards. We look to impose our rules on others while living irrationally.

We need to be the stepping stone for the future, not the winding reel of the past. We need to look beyond opportunity and look around reason. We need to stop fearing ourselves and make ourselves an asset.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
