Today marks an amazing day in United States history. The Supreme Court of the United States has spoken and marriage equality for same-sex couples has won in a 5-4 vote this morning. The ruling has now lifted the ban on gay marriage in remaining states.
Excitement has taken over the country and cheers were heard outside the courthouse after the announcement was made. Today the court finally took the stand to say that love matters. Love is love and we don’t have the right to take that away from people. Everyone has a civil right to marry and spend their lives with the one they love.
Twitter is blowing up right now with #SCOTUS, #Finally and #LoveWins. There are no words to describe the joy I feel inside at this moment. I am overcome with emotion as I sit here and reflect on this historic moment. I have always been someone who believed in equality for others. Some of the people nearest and dearest to my heart are gay. They deserve to have the right to marry just like everyone else. I have watched my friends be bullied by their family members. Today, no one can take that right away from them.
I am so proud of my country for finally making the right decision. The Declaration of Independence states that every person has the right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” So why shouldn’t same-sex couples be happy? That right to happiness includes being able to have the same rights as everyone around you, including marriage. We are finally giving people the right to pursue their happiness and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
A while back I wrote an article about Ireland’s decision and I am so lucky to be able to write about this today. I was proud of Ireland, a country tied to my heritage and today I am proud of the United States, the country I call my home.
People I love and care about can get married in any state of their choosing. Ireland made waves with their #VoteYes decision and it continued with Mexico. America can finally join the club of countries that offer marriage equality. We have always been called a melting pot, full of unique cultures and people, as well as opportunities. How are we a melting pot if we don’t offer the same opportunities and rights to everyone? How are we a melting pot if we don’t practice love for everyone? Today the U.S. is truly a melting pot.
There is no official news on when this will take effect, but it will be soon! There are fourteen states that will now have to lift their marriage ban. Thank you, SCOTUS, for making history today. Today serves as lesson for all that love can conquer anything and ignite that fire to fight for what it right. Marriage equality is here and we are damn proud of it. It’s been a long time coming. Love is love. Let that rainbow flag fly!
