Last month, one of The Odyssey's writers from The University of Illinois published an article concerning the woman who is taking the public forum (and hopefully the presidency) by storm: Hillary Clinton.
The article, 8 Reasons Hillary Clinton Should Definitely Not Be President, discusses some apparent issues with the former First Lady.
Naturally, I take issues with these highly unfounded flaws. For all of my fellow HRC 2016 supporters out there, here are eight reasons Hillary Clinton should definitely BE President of the United States of America.
1. She won't be the first elected relative of a former President.
First of all, it's not like two Presidents being related is anything new. Familial ties within the presidency go all the way back to the early 1800's when John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams were both elected to office. Theodore and Franklin Delano Roosevelt were cousins, and George H. W. Bush is the father of George W. Bush. Face it, this country has a family tradition to uphold!
2. She's as honest as any President.
Anybody who believes that a President always tells the truth might have lost a few marbles along the way. Nixon lied about Watergate, Obama made false promises about health care reform, and even the infallible Ronald Reagan told a fib when discussing weapons sales to Iran. No President is a saint, and I'm sure Hillary will be no different!
3. Her platform is solid and clear.
As candidates make their way into the spotlight, their statements are almost always ambiguous. It's like an art critic staring at one of Jackson Pollock's paintings and saying, "WHAT DOES IT MEAN?" Interestingly enough, Hillary has painted quite a clear picture by already outlining her staunch opinions on marriage equality, abortion, and equal pay. I don't have an artistic bone in my body, and even I can understand what she means!
4. She's really, really into bipartisanship.
In an arthritic national government hallmarked by gridlock, indecision, and party-based squabbles, we need a President willing to cross party lines to get things done. Hillary, a Democrat, actually supported the war in Iraq! Yes! The apocalypse is now! A Democrat sided with the Republicans! Seriously, though, we need a woman who can work on both sides of the spectrum and stand by her convictions!
5. She is dedicated to all Americans.
Hillary was born to a textile businessman and a homemaker, and she attended public school throughout her primary education. She graduated high in her senior class and was voted "Most Likely to Succeed," going on to study political science and law. Being a political activist from a young age, she fought for the rights of women and children and was a huge Civil Rights supporter.
6. She knows how to deal with scandal.
If we know one thing about Hillary Clinton, it is that she is very adept at handling controversy. First it was Monica Lewinsky and now it is emails concerning the Middle East. Throughout it all, she has remained fiercely dedicated and extremely transparent, which are two qualities not often seen in spouses or presidents!
7. She's not old. She's experienced.
I get rather annoyed when people resort to calling someone old in order to discredit them. So what if Hillary is 67 years old! It just means she's got roughly 50 more years of experience in this country than any college student, so who are we to say she can't perform?
8. Last, but not least, she's a WOMAN.
For far too long, this country has been obsessed with The Man. I'm all for the overturning of the patriarchy by electing a strong, elegant, bold, and capable woman to be the leader of this great country. It is time that the word "woman" stops being equated with the word "incapable." It is time that we highlight the wonderful women that have been historically oppressed. It is time for Hillary Clinton! And besides, she'll look better in office than most of her male counterparts. (Looking at you, Martin Van Buren.)
