Highlights from Michelle Obama's Carpool Karaoke

One of the most popular segments on the Late Late Show with James Corden is Carpool Karaoke. Corden is joined by singing sensations such as Stevie Wonder, Adele, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Justin Bieber, as they drive around L.A. belting out songs together. He makes something ordinary, extraordinary. As Corden states in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, “There is something very joyful about seeing someone sing their hits in the environment that we sing them in all the time.”

Last Wednesday, Corden was joined by a special guest - First Lady Michelle Obama. This was a long awaited and highly anticipated collaboration.

Although she's not a singer, Michelle Obama took the lead like a true professional.

Here are some of the highlights from the segment:

  1. The Absurdity of the Situation

Wandering into foreign territory, James Corden encounters the vigilant security protocol of the White House. The segment begins with a thorough interrogation of the driver and a search of his vehicle, before he has even entered the gate. He is then joined by Michelle Obama under the guise that she is taking him for a tour. This is the first time in months, as she points out, that she has been in the front seat of a car. Furthermore, unlike his usual routine of driving on the streets in L.A. with his guests, Corden is seen driving in a loop inside the perimeter of the White House while being followed by security detail.

2. When MObama Made Beyoncé Proud

Not only did she know all the words to Single Ladies, she knew the dance moves as well.

3. Missy Elliot’s Surprise Cameo

The throwback to “Get Your Freak On” was thoroughly enjoyed and perfectly executed by the trio.

4. James Asking Hard-Hitting Questions

As President Obama’s term ends soon, there are several questions people are posing regarding the future of the Obamas. James took this opportunity to ask the most important question of all: how Michelle feels about no longer having access to 24 hour room service. We discover the First Lady is a talented cook, so she hopes she won't miss the privilege too much.

5. Introducing MObama’s Song

Continuing to surprise us with her many talents, Michelle Obama sings her own song “This is for my Girls.” This song was sung in collaboration with several famous female artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Lea Michele, Zendaya and Kelly Rowland.

6. #LetGirlsLearn

You might come away from this segment impressed by Michelle Obama’s dance skills or the fact that she can make a “mean grilled cheese sandwich.” The real take-away for me is when she tells her audience to always be truly grateful for the opportunity to receive an education. Michelle Obama uses her platform wisely. She talks about her passion for making a difference in the lives of 62 million girls all over the world today, who do not have have access to education. She discusses the campaigns she is involved with in the hope of furthering this cause.

With each and every Carpool Karaoke, James Corden continues to experiment and surprise his audience. He keeps us wanting more. As enjoyable as this segment was it was equally thought provoking, which added something extra special. Now that we’ve seen that Corden's front seat is not exclusively reserved for singers, we can only wonder who his next A-list guest will be.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
