The Golden Globes are one of my favorite award shows for hitting both television and film awards. The acceptance speeches this year were heartfelt and/or truly inspirational. Some used a spotlight for a message the actor found important, or perhaps nudged colleagues with a few jokes. There was a beautiful variety of dresses, and a few more creative suits than other award shows yet much less emphasis and pressure on who looked best and worst. There was glamour, tears, laughter, and love that filled a room full of stars, and it felt like us at home were truly there with them. Here are the best moments of the 74th Golden Globes.
1. Jimmy Fallon’s musical opening and monologue
"You might remember Manchester by the sea for being the only thing from 2016 that was more depressing than 2016."2. Viola Davis’ speech
"To the original Troy, my father Dan Davis... he had a fifth grade education, didn't know how to read until he was 15. But you know what? He had a story and it deserved to be told."
3. Tracee Ellis Ross' speech
"[To] all the amazing people that brought me here in my career because it's nice at 44. I like it here!"4. Kristen Wiig and Steve Carell's "first time I watched an animated movie" stories
"I never saw my father again after that day... 'Fantasia' day."
5. The tribute video for Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher
May they both rest in peace.
6. Claire Foy’s speech
"I think the world could do with a few more women at the center of it, if you ask me."
7. Meryl Streep’s tribute video for the Cecil B. DeMille Award
So many fantastic roles in so many fantastic films.
8. Meryl Streep's speech
"Thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press... you and all of us in this room really belong to the most vilified segments in American society right now. Think about it: Hollywood, foreigners, and the press."
9. Donald Glover’s speech
"My dad used to tell me everyday like, 'You can do anything you want,' and I remember thinking as a kid in third grade like, 'You're lying to me.'" But now I do stuff and he's like, 'I didn't think that was possible,' so..."
