14 Things High School Tennis Taught Me

Because sometimes the lessons are greater than the game.

The lessons you can learn from any sport are endless, but the things I learned from playing tennis can't compare to what any other sport ever taught me. The four years I dedicated to high school tennis were wonderful and some of my best memories were made on the courts. Here's everything I learned playing high school tennis.

1. Small Teams Do It Better

The best team I was ever a part of only had seven players and we did just fine.

2. Third Sets and Tie-breakers Are the Work of the Devil

And some days you do a lot of work for the devil... and it's exhausting.

3. Teammates Make the Best Cheerleaders

High school tennis wasn't exactly a spectator sport, but we still had a cheering section for those long matches.

4. It's All in the Wrist

One of my instructors at tennis camp told me this when I was thirteen and I didn't believe him, but once I actually started trying to serve fast, I figured out he might have been onto something.

5. The Best Skirts Have a Place to Keep Your Balls

There's nothing worse than having to run off for another ball after every serve.

6. Managing is Just as Fun as Playing

And it makes your season twice as long.

7. You're Always Sure

One thing you learn about line calls is that no matter how unsure you really are, when you're questioned, you're sure. Every. Single. Time.

8. It's All in the Toss

If you could pay college tuition with the phrase "Get your toss up" I wouldn't have to worry about a penny.

9. You Don't Have to Be a Leader to Be a Captain

Sometimes captains are just the oldest members of the team that know how to have the most fun.

10. Good Doubles Partners Are Hard to Find

But it's so worth it when you find them

11. Sometimes the Real Coach Isn't the Coach at All

Whether it's a parent, a captain, or maybe even the manager, you don't always learn the most of from the coach.

12. Height Matters

Tall people are always asked about basketball, volleyball, and modeling, but height helps on the tennis court too.

13. You Don't Have to Win to Have a Good Time

Maybe this is just because my team was almost always last in the league, but I had as much fun losing as I did winning.

14. The Tennis Team Actually Exists

I'm not quite sure how, but there were a lot of people at my school that didn't even know we had a tennis team. At least by playing I knew we existed and I could tell people all about it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
