About four hours away from Holland, Michigan, sits one of many gems in the mitten state. Mackinac Island is a 20-minute ferry ride from the lower peninsula and is the perfect destination for anyone looking to escape reality for a little bit.
One of the many charms of the island is that cars are not allowed. Everyone travels by foot, bike, or horse-drawn carriage. There are many cute bed and breakfast hotels to stay at that are relatively cheap, but if you're looking to live in luxury, I would highly recommend staying at the Grand Hotel. The staff waits on patrons hand and foot, making you feel like royalty. The hotel has a rule where everyone must be in formal dress after six o'clock each night. The food is exquisite, and the rooms are incredible, but my favorite feature is the large front porch. It overlooks the island with white rocking chairs lining it. It is the perfect spot to sit and relax after a long day exploring the island.
Speaking of exploring, one of the best things to do on the island is to take the 8.2-mile bike ride around the island. There are so many Instagram-worthy spots along the route such as Arch Rock, a rock structure that towers along the shores of Lake Huron. And there is the tunnel of trees right by miles six and seven.
If you only plan on heading to the island for a day, you have to get some fudge. Mackinac Island is famous for their fudge. There are many different fudge shops scattered around the island that all offer a variety of flavors from plain chocolate to Butterfinger and Key Lime Pie!
Mackinac Island is a magical place. As soon as you step foot on the island, it is like being transported to a different time period. The downtown area is quaint and cute while a majority of the island is filled with different trails. It is the perfect place to go to escape from the pressures of reality.
