People who aren’t Greek or haven’t experienced it have asked what Bid Day is all about. Honestly, it’s one of the hardest things to explain to someone without making it sound like some kind of circus. Glitter on more glitter on top of a different color and layer of glitter. Banners, balloon arches and letters, tanks, and face tattoos, yeah maybe it does sound like all its missing is some zoo animals. It may sound crazy and extravagant but when we say Bid Day is the best day, we mean it.
And what may you ask is the occasion? Why all the décor and long time spent on the day’s theme is worth it? Why does it feel like an early Christmas or some big birthday bash? Well, while Bid Day may be fun because of the theatrics, the real excitement of the day comes from one thing and that alone: a new pledge class (a.k.a. 100+ new sisters).
Watching your new sisters run up to your chapter looking so excited and relieved is a sight that garners the anticipation of all. Your little is out there, your new study buddy, your comic relief, a hundred more girls to confide in and love on. Girls that will grow into leaders and role models; one’s that will represent your chapter so well. Knowing that this group of girls was destined to be your sisters, even though you’ve just met is something so special to think on.
What makes Bid Day an extra kind of special is all the work that goes into it. And what goes into it isn’t just what’s accomplished at work week or the hours of sleep we miss out on. It’s all the time spent creating a chapter that we’re proud of representing and building something that is strong but can always, always grow. And a big part of carrying on what we’ve put into a chapter, all the work, and love, is getting a new pledge class. Sharing something you’re proud of with someone you have such high hopes for is a gift; it means the world to pass on a legacy that you and the rest of your sisters will uphold for the rest of your lives.
So to the new sisters that have been welcomed in, openly and honestly, we are all so excited for you. Having been in your place, anxious as ever to open up our bid and feeling the rush of getting your perfect house, we know that this is an amazing time for you. Everything will be so new and so fast that it feels like a blur, in the best sense possible. You’ll meet so many girls ready to talk and open up to you. You’ll find your group in a sea of familiarity and comfort. And of course, it will be so fun, better than you ever expected.
We’ve been waiting for you, anticipating your arrival and are so glad to have met you, finally! This experience is about to take you to so many places with some of your best friends tagging along for the ride. It will be what you make it, and we hope you make it the best part of your time in college and thereon after. We can only hope that you share in our joys and consider this a place that you love and cherish as much as all your other sisters.
