Hey Baby, What's Your Genre?

Where EDM meets astrology.

Hey Baby, What's Your Genre?
Hannah Dye & Elena Escobedo

It was either the last full moon or a fortune cookie; but, something inspired me to match our musical tastes with how we interpret the zodiac. Indulging in daily, weekly, and monthly editions of astrological breakdowns my whole life long, or gauging just how right Mr. Right actually is based on his birthday... I can't help but imagine it would be better to map musical influences like cosmic ones. If sound identified with the stars it would go something like this:

1. Aries- Progressive House

Energetic, adventurous, and dynamic. Is that Axwell in your ears or are you just happy to see me?

2. Taurus- Deep House

Patient, reliable, loving and persistent. Deep house is definitely warm-hearted and even self-indulgent. Gives off the heady "We are all stardust" vibe.

3. Gemini- Breakbeat

Indecisive, intelligent, and inconsistent AF this was a clear connection. The loops and syncopated rhythm make it hard to keep up but we love them anyways.

4. Cancer- Drum & Bass

Coming off the cusp of breakbeat with a Black Sun Empire in Jungle rising is the ever changing, impulsive, shrewd, and imaginative styling of drum & bass.

P.S. Respect Drum & Bass is taking over Avalon this month; so, your horoscope reads that the planets will align on August 25 around 10 p.m. and the heavens will bless thee with all the eargasms.

5. Leo- Disco

From water to fire making a quantum leap through EDM genres back to our roots. Good ol' disco. Generous, warm-hearted, expansive and surely pompous. Disco lion untz untz disco lion untz untz

6. Virgo- House

Back to an earth sign... Can you tell I reallyyyy like house yet? Virgos and house are truly practical, reliable, and diligent. Love Virgos, love house music. Slide into my DMs if you think it's in the stars for us ;)

7. Libra- Ambient

Ahhhh My BFF and partner in crime (not an admission of guilt). Ambient and Libri are the chill of all chills with balance, beauty, and flirtatious perfection. Highly recommend raving the night away with either.

8. Scorpio- Dubstep

Wasn't it obvious?? Powerful, obstinate, determined and yet transient, dubstep comes in and out of our lives like a toxic relationship. Be wary of extraordinary facial responses.

9. Sagittarius- Trap

Blindly optimistic, free-spirited and often lacking in tact these two go hand in hand. Youthful constellation and oscillation with a Sun in RL Grimes' House.

10. Capricorn- Techno

Practical, dominant, disciplined. Just so happens one of my favies Nicole Moudaber represents both.

11. Aquarius- Trance

Yours truly, an Aquarius Princess and Trance Queen... Obv had to give the best genre to the best sign. We are known as humanitarian, loyal, original, and independent. Undeniable flow, endlessly climbing to new heights, truly cosmic and transcendental.

12. Pisces- Trouse

Fluctuating, deep, imaginative and indecisive. Not dominantly one thing or the other but a combination creating a wonderful balance. Bringing us full circle bridging the styles and completing the EDM Zodiac.

Now get out there and find your musical match!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
