An Open Letter To 2016

Well 2016, it's been real.

An Open Letter To 2016
New York Daily News

2016. A year of Trump, protests, and personal adventures.

This was a year full of amazing adventures and new friendships. So many amazing things happened this year, I'm not sure how 2017 can top it. At the beginning of this year, I had no idea what to expect, but I'm happy to say that 2016 did not disappoint.

Looking back at the year, it's crazy to think how different life has become. With the start of a new school year came new friends, new ideas, and new experiences. Making one decision differently could have led to an entirely different year. Do not regret anything that happened in 2016, because every single decision shapes you into the person you are today, and that is a beautiful fact of life. Being thankful for every decision is important to your happiness going into this next year.

This year was a huge year for our country. 2016 brought the opportunity to elect a new leader of America. With this new election came new opportunities and open doors. The 2016 election seemed controversial to say the least. America became so passionate about the candidates, in some cases that passion turned into violence. Violence in America has sadly seemed to become a way of life. The national idea of violence has gone from, "I hope this never happens" to "When will this happen next." That is a tragic mindset, but sadly, one that is now embedded in American culture.

There have been many moves toward equality in 2016. From those such as Black Lives Matter and Gay Rights movements, every action brought an equal yet opposite reaction: some being good and some being bad. Nevertheless, America has changed due to those.

On a brighter note, 2016 has been a big year in the entertainment industry. Songs like Sorry by Justin Bieber, Closer by the Chainsmokers, and One Dance by Drake took the nation by storm.

Not to mention Beyonce was on fire this year (but who's surprised #queenbey).

Perhaps one of the most scandalous fights of 2016 was between, you guessed it, Taylor Swift vs. Kanye West and Kim Kardashian (AKA Kimye). No one was neutral in this battle. It practically divided the world. Needless to say, TSwift had a tough year.

I think it's safe to say 2016 was a year of ups and downs, like most years typically are. We gained good music, movies, and new leaders, but we also went through catastrophic tragedies. The future may seem scary, but without the new we would not be able to move forward. This past year was eventful and amazing, but who is to say that 2017 won't be even better.

So, let's not be sad for what has happened.. be excited for what is to come.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
