Curiosity is like your two-year-old sibling or cousin or nephew who comes at you with a barrage of questions about everything and nothing, you get frustrated not at your cousin or sibling but at the inefficiency in answering all the questions sometimes with stuttering other times with hesitation.
Curiosity is like the San Franciscan cold on a New Year eve which burrows through consciousness in a subtle manner.
Curiosity is like an umbrella which shelters all other elements of success, all other personal development tools you have been trying to acquire for your arsenal all your life and some of you will try to gain this New Year. Stretch out and grab and hold the source, curiosity. From discipline to enthusiasm, zeal, passion, drive, commitment, focus, fear, all lead to curiosity. But it is a different kind of umbrella because it can be developed through inquiry, inquisitiveness and an interest in everything around you which you value. Go ye henceforth and develop your umbrella.
One of my favorite mentors, Charlie Munger, was known for the 'go to bed smarter than when you woke up' statement. This statement I believe applies to curiosity. Curiosity is the fuel which drives the statement above. You can adopt this statement as your mantra-your welcome-but combining it with curiosity propels you to a fearless height. When you cross paths with an individual or knowledge and can’t help but be charmed by the experiences of the moment.
Once someone made a statement about perspectives saying: If you are looking for understanding, change your perspective. Changing your perspective about things and people can lead to understanding but I also think it goes further and deeper than perspective. The solution lies in curiosity, by being curious. By being curious, you recognize that the faces that cross you every day are not just mere faces but histories. Individual and ancestral histories and you realize that you are surrounded and are part of a narrative far richer than knowledge any history book could provide you. You become one with this history; a part of the narrative, the history, the narrative becomes you.
I don’t know about you but I get bored easily. However, what keeps me going is curiosity. Curiosity has been my knight in shining armor with great results. It is a propellant operating in all facets of my life not just my life but in the life of so many persons. For example the author and award winning producer Brian Grazer, Curiosity played a role in his successful career which prompted him to write a book about curiosity called A Curios Mind.
In the Curious Mind, Brian mentions of practices of curiosity and the intricacies involved in curiosity. Curiosity to Brian Grazer is a spiritual practice that gets him to a place of truth with whoever he is curious about or whatever he was curious about. Through curiosity, Brian met people who taught him and the knowledge impressed upon him has influenced the entirety of his life. They can influence your life too. Therefore, you should endeavor to make curiosity a habit. Happy New Year.
