If you are like me, you just moved off-campus and are now a resident of Dahlonega proper. You got through living in the dorms perfectly fine, but this is a whole new story. Here are a couple of things that may cross your mind when you live off-campus for the first time:
1. I miss Chow.
I’ll be the first to say it: I miss Chow. I never understood or appreciated the convenience of ready-made meals until I moved off-campus. I know we complain all the time about the lack of variety in Chow, or how our tummies may feel after, but all I’ve had to eat this week is hot dogs and rice. So, yeah, I’d kill for some Chow Mongolian or Buffalo Chicken Pizza right about now. (Yes, Mom, I am using my meal plan, just not as frequently as I would like to.)
2. What is a utility and why is it so expensive?
According to Merriam-Webster, a utility is “a service (such as a supply of electricity or water) that is provided to the public.” Utility is such a silly word. How about we try something different like necessity. It's 2015, people. Try spending more than a day without power or water (if you were here last year during our Snowpocalypse, you know what I’m talking about). It can be done, but no one is going to be happy about it. I know we're all suffering through Windstream up here, but at least it’s better than nothing. I now understand why they charge us an arm and a leg – it’s because we literally cannot live without these services.
3. So I guess I'll never find convenient parking.
I understand that there is parking. It’s there; I see it. However, I always imagined moving into my first apartment and having my own personal parking spot, with the apartment number on it and everything. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. No, even after I leave campus for the day, I still get the privilege of driving around my complex, looking (hoping (praying)) for a convenient parking spot. Then defeatedly parking in front of the clubhouse and walking back to my building. At least that helps me reach my FitBit goal.
4. Why does my smoke alarm keep going off?
Dear apartment, I just want to quietly make a bagel while I’m drinking my coffee in the morning. I don’t need you to drop a sick beat every time I plug in my toaster. I appreciate you low-key encouraging my dreams of becoming the next best rapper, but can we not do that at 8 a.m.?
Love, Molly.
5. Why doesn't Chick-fil-A deliver?
It’s 8:30 p.m., I haven’t had anything to eat all day but I really don’t want to get up from my desk and walk to my car - thus risk losing my bomb parking spot - and go pick up dinner. And making dinner myself would just be too easy. Chick-fil-A, y u no deliver, bro?
6. Wow, I really miss my Mom.
Mom – I hope there has never been a day that has passed while I was living under your roof where I failed to thank you for all that you do. You and dad were able to juggle one kid playing two sports in the same season, one kid that volunteered more hours than there are in a day, and one perma-sassy teenager, ALL while still being able to cook a full meal, do everyone’s laundry, and be my go-to-guys for everything. Amazing.
