Having someone you love pass away unexpectedly will be one of the hardest things to happen to you. You begin thinking about everything you never got to do or tell that person. Wishing Heaven was a phone call away will be an everyday thought. So I’ve thought about a few things that I wish I would’ve done while my loved one was still here.
1. I would’ve spent more time with you.
I would have visited you more often and stayed a little longer appreciating every moment I had to spend with you. I would have had ate dinner slowly, had seconds, and thirds, because that was when we had our best conversations, when we were enjoying our pasta.
2. I would’ve asked you more questions about your past.
I want to know your story. I want to hear you talk about your childhood, the school you went to, your best friends, and what you did for fun. I want to hear you talk about you, I want to see your eyes light up when you get excited about the things you did when you were younger.
3. I would’ve hugged you a little longer.
I never understood why you hugged me four or five times before I even had the chance to walk out the door. I thought sometimes that maybe you had just forgot you hugged me and told me “Be safe.” five times before. Now I realize that you never know how many times you’ll get to hug someone, or when it will be the last time. I would have hugged you forever.
4. I would’ve said “I love you.” more often.
Those three words seem to be something we say a lot, and not enough, at the same time. If you were still here, I wouldn’t take advantage of those three words, and I would’ve told “I love you.” a billion more times.
When we played “school” while I was younger, you were always my favorite (and only) student. You told me that I was meant to be a teacher, even as a little kid. I am attending college now as an Education major, and making the Dean’s List. You are my inspiration and I just want to make you proud.
I regret everything I didn’t do while you were here, but I know now that I have an angel watching over me.
