You're the only ice cream for me, babe.

Dear Malley’s,

For as long as I can remember, you have always been there, waiting as I would walk into your beautifully pink-walled dining area, with a bowl of pretzels welcoming me on a table. I would open your perfectly laminated menu, glancing over all the incredible choices of ice cream sundaes that were offered. Not only are there so many wonderful sundae options, but your ice cream flavors never fail to make me the happiest girl in the world. And the service! I am never let-down by your workers’ quickness and knowledge of the products. The anticipation of awaiting my ice cream dish gives me butterflies like no other ice cream parlor ever has. Between your ice cream harmoniously contrasting with your incredible hot fudge, how could one be anything but over the moon when they’re with you?

My father warned me about places like you. He tells me to stop seeing you so often, that a relationship like ours is not healthy, but how can a girl resist? You are perfect in every way, whether it be the fact that you are homemade, or that my friends think you are perfect too. I try to be supportive and “talk you up” to my college friends who have yet to meet you. I cannot wait to introduce them to you, I think you guys will get along just fine.

Not only does your ice cream make me the happiest girl in the world, but your chocolates, candies, and assorted nuts drive me insane. Malley’s, you really know how to make a girl content. I know I can always count on you to be there in my Easter basket, either in the form of a cross or a bunny. That is one thing I truly love about you, you are so willing to spend time with my family and me during holidays, despite your familial commitments. You even show up to my grandparents’ house, looking incredibly dapper in their old china serving dishes. I know you have made such a great impression on all my family members, including my extended relatives. They just cannot resist your charm and strong commitment to tradition, which is what I love about you.

I know the long distance relationship has been tough and we do not get to see each other as often, but we always make it work. Thinking about how I cannot be there with you right now drives me crazy, but I know that our love is so strong that it will never perish. There is such a wonderful familiarity when we finally reunite, it’s almost as if I have never left. That is what I adore about us, we can always just pick up right where we left off. Know that my love is with you always and even when we are apart, you are always on my mind.

XOXO,

Your Not-So-Secret Admirer.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
