Being a college student is already a stress factor, trying to make sure you pass your classes, financial aid is giving you the run around, and on top of all that you still have to work to pay the bills! And if that’s not enough, dealing with roommates can really put the icing on the cake. Whether you’re a freshman or sophomore on campus in a dorm or you’re a junior or senior living in an apartment here are some tips to help you have a healthy relationship with your roommates.
1. Clean up after yourself
It’s pretty much self explanatory and common courtesy. Just think about it if you were at your mom’s house you wouldn’t do it, so don’t do it here! Wash your dishes; nobody wants to come home to a pile of someone else’s dirty dishes in the sink or food on the stove. We have to cook too! Don’t leave out your food or other objects in the common area, that area is for everyone if you want to leave things out, do it in your room. Try not leave clothes in the washer or dryer. It's easy to forget sometimes, but you must be courteous to your roommates washing needs! Always pull your weight, stay on your Ps and Qs.
2. Always be straightforward.
If there is a problem, let your roommate know. Rather it be they left something out or you moved something. Even if you're going out of town, or you're subleasing the apartment. Communication can go a long way. Always say how you feel to them, and not anyone else. Update them if you will have guests over or if you have a client, that way they are prepared for your visitors. Surprise visits are a no go, this is your house as well but letting others know in advance will prevent conflict.
3. Ask before you take
Plain and simple, don't touch it if it is not yours. One of the most common rules that are usually broken by roommates. Not only is it rude but its disgusting. Just imagine how you would feel, you spend your time and money fixing a meal for yourself and someone comes behind you and eats it. Not only meals, but snacks, beverages even noodles! It is a fight for survival to get food sometimes, let your roommate enjoy in peace. After all, it's theirs anyway. Don't be a moocher.
4. Keep the noise level down
Rather it be your guests, your music, moving objects, or even a simple conversation keep it down. Everyone's schedule is different. Even though you don't have to work your roommate might have to, regardless of the time keep your noise level down. If its something you cannot prevent, shoot them a text and let them know you will have it down as soon as possible. There is nothing more aggravating than interrupted sleep.
5. Greet them when you see them.
Speaking to roommate can make their day. Even if they don't speak back, you are still being considerate. That would be your good deed. Its the thought that counts in this matter. Don't be disrespectful even if they don't go about your day, living stress free.
6. Lock the doors behind you
Never be too comfortable in a new apartment or dorm. By all means it is your new home but you have to watch your surroundings at all times. Theft and robbery is most common in college residences. Keep your valuables locked in your room as well. Always leave it in something safe, for example a trunk that you can lock, or even a dresser if you do not have access to a trunk. In a closet in your box if you have to. Thieves will take anything they can get there hands on, make sure its not the valuables that are the hardest to replace.
7. Be courteous
To sum it up, all you have to do to be a good roommate is be courteous. Generosity can take you a long way in life. Help each other out! It can be as simple as making sure that the person behinds you has a clean environment to come home to. Remember small things like cutting off the lights, every one has to pay for utilities its not fair to everyone in the house or to you! Look out for each other, and make your living experience better. If you can help them in any way try do so. You don't have to be the best of friends to get along with your roommate, as long as you are doing your part there should be no issues. With these tips you can live a happy healthy life with your roommates!
