The 2016 election proved to be a tough time for everyone. However, it still continues to be tough with a new headline nearly everyday for Americans to worry about. One of my favorite ways to get out anger, anxiety, and depression is to write. Luckily, some of my favorite artists seem to be the same way, because I feel that some of the greatest music has come out of this political era. Anyone from country to Broadway to pop music has created a song that has come from the deepest parts of their hearts to combat the hatred presented in our country. Of course, protest songs are not a new thing in the music industry, see Green Day's "American Idiot", but it seems that they are more meaningful in this day and age.
Here are three of my favorite songs that have come out of this political era. Give them a listen and feel the artist's emotion within them.
1) "What About Us" by P!nk
While the meaning is never explicitly stated within the song, it's pretty clear what P!nk is trying to convey. Always the artist to face politics head on, P!nk has created one of her most beautifully crafted songs to date with "What About Us".
KEY LYRIC: "What about love? What about trust? What about us?"
2) "Dear Hate" (feat. Vince Gill) by Maren Morris
A beautiful song that came out of the tragic shooting in Las Vegas, Maren Morris sings with a heavy heart. It's such a glorious reminder that we cannot let hate win in any situation.
KEY LYRIC: "But I hate to tell you, love's gonna conquer all"
3) "Almost Like Praying" by Lin Manuel Miranda and Various Others
A song that came out of the devastation of Hurricane Maria, "Almost Like Praying" names every city in Puerto Rico affected. This song shows the strength of the country and shows that Puerto Rico will pull through this, with or without the help of a certain political party.
KEY LYRIC: "Say it soft and it's almost like praying"
