Being the younger child definitely has its perks. You have an older sibling to teach you the ropes before you have to go through them on your own. More than just that, having an older sibling, especially an older brother, is really something to be thankful for and appreciate.
Growing up as the younger sibling, you look up to your brother, both literally and figuratively. From the time you are small, you find yourself enchanted by your brother’s every move and curious to what he is doing at all times of the day. Thankfully, he is kind enough to let you tag along and engage with you. Read on to see why if you have an older brother, you are among the luckiest out there.
1. You Always Have Someone to Hang With
Luckily, having an older brother means that you have a somebody to hang out with for life. An older brother is like your best friend who just happens to be related to you, and that is pretty cool. From the time you were in elementary school, you can recall playing outside with your brother, whether that be tag, hide and seek, basketball, rollerblading, or any other great activity. You two always are able to find something fun to engage in. As you and your brother got older, you felt like one of the guys when he always encouraged you to come and hang out with him and his friends. Not all brothers want their little sister tagging along, so that is definitely a great feeling.
2. He's A Permanent Role Model
You look up to your older sibling and take notice of their accomplishments. It is refreshing to have someone in your life who is motivated, smart, and caring. Naturally, you think your brother is the best thing since sliced bread from the time you can walk, so it is not a surprise that you look to him for advice and as an exemplary model. If he did sports, you wanted to try sports. If he showed impressive work at school, you wanted to do well, also.
3. He Is Always There For You
One of the best things is that your brother is not just your playmate when you are young, but also someone you can confide in and talk to whenever. No matter if you live in the same state, or in different parts of the country, your brother is always there to lend an ear and listen to whatever you have to say. He has been there, done that, so his first-hand experience is always insightful.
4. He Broke the Rules First
Definitely a perk to being the younger child, your brother most likely broke the rules first. This means that when it came time for you to replicate that same behavior, it did not seem as bad because your brother had already done it. Thank you for taking the bullet on that one!
5. Sports Are in Your Vocabulary
Some girls have very little idea about any rules or terms used in sports—and that is not right or wrong. However, having a brother definitely meant learning virtually everything about every sport because you were either watching him play in one of his various games, or ESPN was permanently on the TV at home. Either way, having some understanding of sports is actually a beneficial thing, and over the years, you have come to love football, baseball, and basketball because you know what is happening in each play. This makes it even more fun when you two share the same love for the same hometown teams and cheer them on together.
A brother means a lifetime of friendship, support, and guidance. It also means you never had to fight over clothes, shoes, and makeup like it would have been if you had a sister. Thank God for that. Having an older brother has definitely shaped who I am, and for that, I am incredibly thankful.
