Have We Been Overestimating The Intelligence Of Brain Surgeons?

Presidential candidate Ben Carson is continuing to make strange claims.

Have We Been Overestimating The Intelligence Of Brain Surgeons?

The 2016 presidential elections are still a year away, but the candidates have been stealing the media spotlight for the past few months. Whether it's Hillary Clinton and her emails, something racist said by Donald Trump, or a candidate finally doing something good, they are always making headlines. More recently, candidate Ben Carson has been largely talked about, and not for any actual political prowess. The best way to sum up the situation is nicely put in one of TV writer/producer, Danny Zuker's tweets: "Like him or not, Ben Carson has forced us to ask some tough questions like 'Have we been overestimating the intelligence of brain surgeons?'"

Carson was a well known and respected neurosurgeon until his recent retirement from the field. However, listening to some of the things he says, you may not be able to tell this. Most recently, Carson disputed many archaeologists by claiming that the Egyptian pyramids were not in fact tombs for Pharaohs and other important people, but were built by the biblical figure Jacob to store grain for Egypt in a time of famine. I'm not quite sure if he thinks they started putting dead bodies in there after the grain ran out or what, because we have clear evidence of the bodies of Pharaohs being found in elaborate pyramid tombs.

Carson also has a past history of saying some weird things. For example, Carson believes that homosexuality is a choice, contradicting many current scientific studies and ideologies that prove otherwise. Even worse, he used the idea that "a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight, and when they come out, they're gay."

I'm not even sure what to say about that one.

Dr. Carson has also said that "Obamacare is really I think the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery." Really? You're comparing Obamacare, a method of attempting to help more people get health insurance, to slavery? This would not surprise me as much coming from another conservative person perhaps, but a man of color as well as a doctor... not too sure what the thought process is.

I could continue on with many more strange and just plain incorrect things Ben Carson claims to believe, and that alone should scare you. The fact that he is doing decently in the polls and that people are supporting him is shocking to me. Political views aside, how can you support someone who makes these claims continuously? I'm hoping more people catch on and don't simply laugh about what he's saying and move on. The same goes for Donald Trump, but his comments are more racist and absurd instead of plain crazy.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
