I Hate Being The Only Black Person In My Class

How is it that in a city filled with people of color, we only represent 8 percent of their city's college?

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is the most diverse school out of all UW systems, so why am I the only black person in my class?

I see people of color when I walk to my class, but we always seem to go our separate ways once I reach my class door. Where are they hiding? Am I taking the wrong classes? I'm not sure what it is, but something needs to be done.

I have just finished my fifth semester and not much has changed. I still haven't had a male black professor. Why are we lacking so much color, but are considered the most diverse? This shows how much the other UW schools are lacking in the color department.

Why don't people of color want to attend these schools? Well, maybe it's because we don't feel welcomed. The UW system says it cares about diversity, but where's the diversity? We need a change.

Eighty percent of my professors have been white; how is this not an issue? I would love to see someone who looks like me teaching a class. I want to feel represented just like everyone else on campus.

Where are the people of color hiding? Why won't let they join me in class?

UWM tries its best to make everyone feel comfortable, but that's just not enough. There are so many students who don't feel accepted on campus.

The students, the staff and even the speakers who come to UWM never match my skin. The world is more than just the color white, but going to UWM you would never know.

We may be the most diverse, but we're still behind in diversity compared to other universities. I want to see color everywhere I go not just when I'm in the union.

I remember being in an English class a few semesters ago and I was the only black person in the class. We ended up discussing what it feels like to be black in America. We all went in a circle discussing what that means and how it would feel. I sat there and listened to everyone's response, but it went in one ear and out the other. Yet, there was one student's response that stood out to me.

She was a young white woman who had never seen a black person before she came to UWM. She had a culture shock, but her story didn't surprise me. A white person can go their entire life without meeting one black person, but a black person can't go a day without seeing at least one white person. My point is, in a world filled with white, I want to see color.

Not just black people, but Asians, Hispanics, everything! America is supposed to be a melting pot, but all I ever see is one thing.

This is not an article dissing white people, but, instead, an article uplifting people of color. We're underrepresented in everything we do and it's not right. This article will rub some people the wrong way, but it needs to be told.

I'm tired of it. I'm tired of it all. How can we call ourselves the most diverse, when we have students who don't feel we're diverse at all?

White people make up 68 percent of the UWMs student population according to http://www.collegeportraits.org/WI/UWM/print.

How is that a city filled with people of color only represent 8 percent of their city's college? The numbers just don't add up, but no one seems to care... But I do!

I care about everyone and everyone needs to be represented. From the students to the staff, we need more diversity.

If we really want to consider ourselves the most diverse UW school, then we need to act like it!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
