This year's AMAs did not have a lot of fanfare (outside of Matt Bellasai) and it seemed for good reason. Bruno Mars came out with a strong opening and Niall performed his new solo hit "This Town." Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj sang "Side to Side" again with an island theme, and Drake lip-synced Bad Blood.
This year's show seemed lackluster, to put the most positive spin on it. Jay Pharaoh and Gigi Hadid seemed awkward on stage together, Drake won best rap album that he spent half the time singing on trying to recreate a sound from "Take Care" that he simply can't do again. He seems to be more caught up in the drama and the politics of music than he does the quality of what he puts out. Zayn won "New Artist of the Year" as an established performer already albeit by himself. However with DNCE it was the same story, Joe Jonas has had a following since 2006. It's not fair to those like Alessia Carra or even Shawn Mendes who have been mainstream for less than two years to give it to artists who have already won multiple AMAs.
The performances were almost as forgetful as the awards portions. Bruno Mars came out and killed it like always, Niall premiered his solo single to the award show stage, and Sting held it down for the older generations, but Ariana and Nicki performed Side to Side for the second time at an award show, however the revamped performance was not as conversation worthy as the first with the exercise bikes. Green Day's felt awkward and not with the flow of the already horrendous show. Closing the show with that Maroon 5 and "Kendrick" performance was like the final stab in a long and excruciating death. We all know how well Kendrick performs solo at awards and to stick him into a 30-second feature felt cheap. He could have been the bright spot in this debacle, but he instead got stuck outside of the limelight, and we all suffered from it.
I hate to make this sound as negative as it is, but the talent at these award shows is declining, Drake being nominated in Rap and Pop/Rock is the prime example. At this point do we even call him a rapper? Or is pop star who sings a little faster sometimes more appropriate? Views was as forgettable as this whole show.
Grammy's, please be better.
