On Saturday October 21st, there was a concert called "We Can Survive" in Los Angeles, California to benefit Breast Cancer and honor the people who are diagnosed, both living and dead. It included performances by Alessia Cara, Macklemore, Harry Styles, Kesha, Khalid, Sam Hunt, Niall Horan and many others.
Concerts are supposed to be a safe space for both performer and concert-goer. During Harry Styles' performance of his song Kiwi, a fast-paced rock song in which he moves around the stage, getting very close to the audience in the "pit" (or the closer, gated area of the venue in which the people stand) and it got out of control. People in the "pit" can get very aggressive and it's usually for the excitement of the song, the artist, or everyone trying to get to the barricade (or the front). During the performance, a "fan" decided that it would be a good idea to grope his crotch. He does crouch down to the audience, giving the girl easy access, but that is no excuse to touch a performer in such a private area.
Over the past couple of days, I've seen the media cover the topic, mostly from Twitter. Articles have been written out, and it's been spoken about on TMZ, E! News and many other popular media outlets. The Sun said, "CAN'T TOUCH THIS: Harry Styles has his crotch grabbed by a VERY eager fan at We Can Survive concert." This article — like its title — continues to be insensitive and somewhat passive aggressive towards Harry Styles, saying he shouldn't get too close because of the eager fans. TMZ said "Is Harry Styles asking to get his crotch touched?" which was a video of the heartless employees of TMZ speaking about the subject.
Not only are they placing the blame on him, but they're also objectifying him in a way that no one deserves to be objectified.
As a fan of him, I was also outraged not just because it was Harry Styles but because the media just blew it off like it was nothing, simply calling the girl an "eager fan" instead of something more demeaning and something that she deserved. Instead of rightly blaming the girl, they are putting it all on him.
I find the media very hypocritical because last week, the hashtag #MeToo was going around. Everyone was sharing their story of sexual abuse, telling the world about something they are vulnerable about and this week, we're back to objectifying someone.
No one deserves to be objectified and violated in such a way as he has, especially someone who is known for his kindness, humbleness and never having anything bad to say about someone. His merchandise even says "Treat People with Kindness," he is constantly telling people at his concerts to embrace the person next to them even if they don't know them, and his most famous line is "I want you to do whatever makes you happiest in the world." Another one of his famous lines is "Always choose love". He is also constantly waving around rainbow flags that fans give him on stage, showing his support for the LGBTQ community. OK, he's basically a walking cliche of a hipster, but how could you not love him and want to treat people nicely after he says those things?
