I saw "Suicide Squad" this past weekend (warning: spoilers ahead) and immediately fell in love with Harley Quinn. She’s a beautiful badass that owns her sexuality and struts the streets with her fellow bad guys with confidence. The whole movie I was even trying to work out how I could make a Halloween costume of her outfit so I could feel that beautiful and badass for a night.
Even though I fell in love, I’ve read some articles lately that complained how Harley Quinn was just another dumb sex object placed in a movie geared toward men to ogle at. In a BuzzFeed article, the author concluded the piece by stating something about how Harley Quinn was just “jerk-off material.” I could feel my face cringe as I read that line because of how ridiculous it was. Yeah, Harley Quinn’s tiny outfit could be described as “slutty," but who cares? This girl is certainly not stupid (after all, she was a psychiatrist), so why should a tiny outfit deem her as an object? Harley is a very smart, sexy woman who uses her sexuality to lure hormone-driven men into her jail cell so she can hurt them and try to escape. She’s very outgoing and peppy, and people need to stop thinking those adjectives are always interchangeable with dumb when associated with a girl.
So what if she wears small clothes? Let’s remember that the actress who played her, Margot Robbie, is absolutely gorgeous. The media would complain how she was a sex object even if she wore a potato sack the whole time. There’s nothing wrong with a woman owning her sexuality and using it to their advantage, so why criticize Harley Quinn for doing just that and getting the job done? After all, she is the one who defeats that ancient witch in the end. A dumb, sex object couldn’t do that, but a powerful and beautiful woman could.
