Most, if not all of us, have recently seen the new movie "Suicide Squad", directed by David Ayer. The king and queen of Gotham City are featured in this film that we all seemed to start tweeting about and falling over Harley Quinn and the clown himself, The Joker.
Although these sociopaths can't really relate to most of us in the aspect of murder and crime, there is one thing we can relate to with this crazy couple: Love.
If we focus on the movie, you will understand where I am coming from. Harley Quinn started off as a normal, independent woman, who was assigned as The Joker's therapist in the asylum where he was kept. After spending much time with him, she falls in love with him. Just like a normal girl might. She didn't care about how many people he had killed or even hurt, she didn't care how messed up he was. She was in love. If he was crazy, he was going to make her crazy with him. Just like any other kind of love. Love makes us so wacky. We do things that we have never thought of doing just for love.
Arguably, the story of The Joker and Harley Quinn is way better than any story like Bonnie and Clyde or Mr. and Mrs. Smith. There isn't really much to their story, but the true love among the two is depicted in the "Suicide Squad". If we look at the scene in the movie where The Joker and Harley Quinn are above the chemicals that she eventually jumps into, The Joker asks her something:
The Joker: "Would you die for me?"
Harley Quinn: "Yes."
The Joker: "That's too easy... Would you live for me?"
Harley Quinn: "Yes."
I think most of us got the chills as Harley Quinn let herself fall into a tub of harsh, bubbling chemicals. What made this scene even more chilling was The Joker attempting to walk away but instead diving in to get her, and of course the passionate kissing scene they share. We don't really see this passion among the two any time before this movie all that much. But oddly enough, this movie gave us all this twisted set of relationship goals. Especially since the director cast two very attractive people. The Joker gives almost all of us girls a weird, yet satisfying, attraction to him (not complaining though).
So what makes this sociopathic relationship goals? Well, The Joker does everything he can to save his beloved Harley Quinn. Kind of an odd "knight in shining armor" ordeal but isn't that what we all want? Someone who will fight (figuratively and literally) for us and will do anything and everything they can to have us? Even these two psychos have a better grip on love than most of us.
Not only that but when people get into a relationship they tend to turn into a mini version of their significant other. Which is kind of cute. Harley becomes just as, and even more so, evil than The Joker. But he loves it! They are the perfect team even if it means committing a multitude of crimes on the daily.
Harley Quinn fell in love with The Joker just like we do with the person we fall for. Thoughtlessly. Everything about that person can be so twisted and messed up, but you fall anyway. How could someone like Harley Quinn, who was originally a therapist, fall head over "guns" for someone like The Joker?
Everyday someone falls into this predicament, falling for someone that may just not be right for them. But they take the chance and fall blindly. Harley even imagines an actual life with The Joker with a beautiful house and kids.
Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
Love is a crazy, yet unexplainable thing. But even twisted freaks like The Joker and Harley Quinn can portray love in a way that is passionate and something that we all crave.
