The Hardships Of Finding A Summer Job As A College Student

Congratulations! You now have another year of school behind you. Where does the time go? As a student trying to manage school, sports and also hoping to maintain somewhat of a social life, there's a dreaded three letter word to add into your already busy life. This word is: JOB. Yes, job, it's a nightmare of a word but is completely necessary because school is expensive and having to pay for rent and food isn't all that cheap either. Generally you’re away at college and busy doing school work for approximately eight months out of the year, but what happens during the other four months that you don't have school? Most students get the whole month of January off due to the holidays and then they get another three or four months off for the summer. College can be expensive so you have to find a way to make some money one way or another. That's where getting a job comes in. Now keeping a job is the easy part, it's finding an employer that will hire you for four months out of the year…..that's the tricky part.

So you want to be a server?

While I’ve heard that working as a waiter or waitress you can make really good money in tips, it's pretty hard to find a serving job without having any experience. So, someone please tell me how to get the training when nobody will hire you to gain the experience? That's the real question! Employers, I tell you.

Now don't even mention a bartending position if you can't find a job as a server!

Not only does bartending often require experience, but it also requires a lot of knowledge. Now don't even get me started on that... it's the same problem as the serving positions. How do you expect to learn if nobody is willing to teach you and to give you a chance? None of it makes sense!

Don't even mention a minimum wage job, what good will that do for me?

If I’m only able to find a job where I can earn minimum wage, then that might be enough to pay for my rent for the summer. You can count me out.

Basically by this time you've wasted most of your summer looking for a job. As the middle of the summer is fast approaching, most likely nobody will hire you because you only have a month left at home to work and nobody wants an employee that's only going to be around for a month. At this point, you just gotta throw your hands in the air and say "screw it" cause you're just a college kid trying to live in the real world. So, if nobody is going to hire you, you might as well have fun for the rest of the summer. After all, college is supposed to be the best four years of your life, right? Next year I may have to start the job search a little bit earlier, but for now I’m ready to fill my soul….bring on the adventures!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
