58 years ago on October 25, 1958 our home away from home was born. 282 dedicated individuals came together to start the vision and foundation for what we now call Grand Valley State University, and we couldn't thank them enough! Now in 2016 we appreciate the history of GVSU, but we are also really thankful for the changes they have made for the better. Take a quick glimpse into the history and traditions of Grand Valley State University.
1. Thank God Louie the Laker got much better looking...
The first Louie the Laker in 1996 was slightly terrifying, but it looks like those fans in the back enjoyed him.
And now he's little bit better here...but still not the Louie we know and love.
Yeah, that's more like it. Thanks Louie for all the Laker pride you bring to GVSU.
2. Couldn't have done it if it wasn't for this guy...
No no no, not GVSU's 2016 Homecoming Regent Brandon Fitzgerald...the man he has his hand on! Bill Seidman is now recognized as the founder of Grand Valley State University. He brought the vision of our beautiful campus to life. So thank you Bill for our lovely home!
3. We are the true definition of "started from the bottom now we're here"
Oh yes you're not seeing things wrong...that's good ol' Kistler Living Center in 1971. Didn't have air conditioning then...doesn't have air conditioning now. But hey it's pretty cool to be a part of GVSU history.
The amount of growth on GVSU's campus is indescribable. It seems like every season is construction season for Grand Valley. Which technically isn't a bad thing when you're a quickly growing university.
4. As the years pass, the beauty is still breath-taking.
Sometimes you just have to stop and appreciate the beauty around you on GVSU's campus. From the changes in the seasons to the magnificent architecture, Grand Valley is always developing, and always breath-taking.
5. So share a cupcake with T. Haas and let's celebrate!
Happy Founders Day GVSU. Let's celebrate with a little birthday party! What other college campus has their very own President pass out cupcakes on their college's Founders Day? Throughout the day on October 25th Grand Valley's President Thomas Haas passes out cupcakes on the Allendale and Pew Grand Rapids campuses at GVSU. Just another cherry (or sprinkles perhaps) on top of GVSU's amazing atmosphere.
From 282 to 25,460, Grand Valley has so much to be proud of, and we're so happy we get to celebrate as well. Congratulations GVSU! Here's to many more years to come.
The Founders Day celebration is organized by the Laker Traditions Team in GVSU's Student Life. For more information, visit www.gvsu.edu/foundersday or to learn more about Grand Valley’s history check out www.gvsu.edu/anniversary.
