The Revert Back To Hand Written Notes

No longer are screens prominent, but rather pen and paper.

In high school, the only notes I, and everyone else around me, ever took were handwritten. Fast forward a few years and entering college, everyone was taking notes on laptops, myself included.

My first year, I typed all of my notes, excluding math classes, and then would later hand write them out in to my notebook. Yes, a pretty ridiculous thing to do and same may even say it is a time waster, but I believe I learn better and subsequently study better when I have hand written notes. Why didn’t I just hand write to begin with? Good question. I think I thought I might not have enough time to copy everything down, or maybe it was the influence of everyone else’s computer screens around me.

Anyway, that’s what I did and had no issue with it. Now, in my second year, there has been a huge shift back to hand written notes. In fact, in all of my classes this quarter hand written notes are either required or highly recommended, basically meaning that they are required.

Each professor started off the first day of class with a similar sentiment:

“You know, there are studies that show why hand written notes are better than typed, and you actually retain more information if you hand write. That’s just some food for thought.” *Cue every student with a laptop slowly closing it, knowing that this was not a statement but rather an order of some sorts.*

While I agree that hand written notes will always be better than typed, and yes, I still get nervous when the professor starts to move too quickly and my fingers feel like they are breaking and I may not get down every little word being said, I think it’s an interesting move as we are getting further and further engulfed in technology.

Professors are beginning to push back against this movement of technology, and I think it’s really smart. Our phones, IPads, Laptops, and Tablets do distract us, no matter how much we deny it and how many times we claim to be experts at multitasking. By no longer allowing us these distractions, we will actually be retaining more information, and when we hit midterms and finals we will actually be more prepared than we think.

It may be annoying to not have your phone to check every five minutes in class, or Facebook to scroll through on your computer, but really we should be thanking our professors that don’t allow this. They are actually helping us out so much more than we think. So, the next time your professor tells you that no electronic note taking is allowed, don’t internally groan or roll your eyes, embrace it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
