Alright, y'all. First of all, I want to start off by saying that this argument is solely directed at the character of Han Solo. Please put the fact that Harrison Ford wanted his character to die out of your mind for a bit, and hear me out on this one.
For those of you that don't know, I am a huge "Star Wars" fan...due in part to my little sister's early Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader obsession and also to the fact that I had to write a paper on "Episode IV" during my freshman year of high school. From that first time seeing "A New Hope" to seeing "The Force Awakens" in the theater at the midnight release this past December, the ruggedly dynamic Han Solo has always been my favorite character. Han stole my heart from the first scene where he made his appearance. Harrison Ford's charm as Han Solo was captivating, and it is no surprise that he captured the hearts of many "Star Wars" fans over the past decades. His character changed and developed so much over the course of the series.
It is pretty obvious to anyone that watched the films that Solo has his faults, but he did not deserve to go out the way that he did. Despite all of his shortcomings, Han Solo was still a genuine person. From his friendship with Chewbacca to his treatment of Rey to his love for Leia. I get that "I know" isn't exactly I love you, but you get the point. Han Solo was a pretty decent guy...aside from letting his son run off to be the minion of a creepy space thing that is.
What I cannot quietly accept though is that Han Solo was so easily vanquished by his son. You cannot tell me that Han Solo would be ignorant enough to go out on a suspended bridge with his dangerous son. I know, I know. He was going to try to bring Kylo Ren home for Leia. Han was trying to make up for the fact that they lost their son to the darkside in the first place. I get that. What I cannot wrap my mind around is the fact that Han Solo became another "Star Wars" cliche. Death or injury by an unstable Skywalker. It is all too typical, and Han Solo deserved better.
At least Han died in a mission to help better the galaxy. With that "heroic" thought aside, you cannot tell me that your heart did not break when you heard Chewbacca cry out in agony the moment Ren impaled Han with his lightsaber or when you saw the look on Leia's face when Han did not return safely.
I said it before, and I will say it again: Han Solo deserved better. I am probably a little incredibly biased, though, since I love Han so very much.
