From the very minute you step on campus as a freshman, it will be shoved down your throat that Hampton University is, and always will be, the standard of excellence. But what does that really mean? With the bar set so high, it leaves a lot of room for confusion and even letdown. What I've learned over the years made me really understand the three crucial components of what they meant by "excellence".
1) The STANDARD of excellence
Here's a little bit of tough love: This means that it is expected – if not required – of you to have a successful tenure at Hampton. As young black college students we know that we have to work 10 times harder than our white counterparts. Professors and faculty members all expect a certain level of professionalism and respect at all times when it comes to the quality of work and dedication that we display. Show up and show out.
1) Excellence does not mean perfection.
The two are simply not synonymous. When one thinks of something that is excellent, it is easy to initially picture something that is perfect, flawless, and great at everything. But that's just not the reality of it. As young college students, we're going to make mistakes – lots of them. It's going to happen. You are going to fail a test and you're going to have a bad day – we all do.
That doesn't mean that you have dropped the ball or should give up – Hamptonians would never do that.
What matters instead is how you bounce back from that setback. What knowledge will you take from that lesson to become a better person? You failed that test; now, how are you going to make sure it won't happen again? Getting a tutor when needed, discussing issues with your professor, and studying harder to ace that next exam – now that's excellence.
An excellent person is not a perfect person. An excellent person is a person determined to do greater things, both for him/herself and for others – not a person who is easily discouraged by the tribulations that come.
3) Why excellence?
Firstly, we owe it to our founders to continue the legacy. Having to make necessary sacrifices in order to better oneself is something that we all face one way or the other – because that's what the real world is like. We're still in college, so in some ways we're still shielded from the "real" world. And when we get out there, we are going to be expected to fly. Hampton is rearing students to be the best that they can be and to aim higher each and every time.
What I've learned is that Hampton doesn't expect perfect little angels as students. Hampton expects students who do not mind putting in the hard work necessary to achieve goals that break records, beat odds, and change lives.
The Illusion of Creativity
AI-generated music is often marketed as “artistic” or “educational.” But what does it really teach?
