11 Things We Miss About Halloween As A Child

It's just not the same.

If you showed up at someone's house in costume at this age asking for candy, you'd most likely end up empty handed and with more than a handful of dirty looks. There's a small range of ages you can be when Halloween is at its peak. And while we can still celebrate Halloween now, it's just not quite the same.

1. Making witch hands

Popcorn. Candy corn. Better eat those hands before they cast a spell on you.

2. Anticipating the first couple of doorbell rings before your parents let you go out yourself

3. Vampire teeth and spider rings

If you weren't trying to see how many rings you could fit onto each finger, you were doing it wrong.

4. Not even considering sexualizing our costumes

Come on, guys, sexy nun? Really? There is a such thing as too far. Believe it or not, this is one of the more tame sexy nun costumes out there.

5. Pumpkin seeds

Scooping out the pumpkin's innards and roasting them made for the perfect little snack.

6. Going to the pumpkin patch to pick out the perfect porch decoration

I don't know about ya'll, but everything on the pumpkin had to be just right for it to be selected -- a fun stem, the shapely roundness, pimple-free, the whole nine yards.

7. The "Just Take One" bowls left out

Neighbors, if you're reading this, this is purely to resonate with others…

8. Apples: both bobbed for and caramel

There was no other time when it was quite as socially acceptable to dunk your head in a vat of water.

9. Getting booed

When the first print-out ghost appeared in a house window, that's when I knew I could start the Halloween countdown. If you don't know what getting booed is, it's when a neighbor fills a goody bag full of treats and rings your doorbell and hides -- anonymous and exciting. You then return the favor to another neighbor and this game continues until the entire neighborhood is filled.

10. Hay rides

I can't seem to put my finger on why riding around on bales of hay was so entertaining, but it was, and it's another thing that made Halloween-time as a child great.

11. Emptying the loot of candy for the night

Nothing beat when Mrs. Johnson from down the street passed out treat bags rather than single pieces of candy and that one house on the corner splurged for King-sized. Sorting out chocolates from sour candies, trading, counting out the sugary goodness -- it was all part of the fun.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
