HallOUween is a block party like no other. All of Court Street is shut down, out-of-towners take over our small town, and we party so hard that we are compared to Mardi Gras and New Year's Eve in Times Square. As an OU student, I am constantly asked by my friends and family from home what HallOUween is like. "Are there crowds?" Yes... "Is it crazy?" Well we don't shut down a whole street for nothing.
To answer those questions and many more, I'm going to show you what HallOUween is like through SpongeBob.
First, you have to pick out a costume.
This isn't a place where you can wear all black and draw whiskers on your face and call yourself a cat. People take this seriously, and people will pick out their costumes months in advance.
Then you have to figure out where you're going to hang out.
Usually people are having parties, and hopefully it's your friends because the bars are more packed than Crystal after recruitment and partying in dorms or your organization's house is definitely not a smart idea.
Once you get to get to Court Street, you have to deal with out-of-towners.
The streets, the bars, the restaurants, all of Athens will be crawling with people who don't even know what Dirty South is.
And of course, there will be absolutely no cell phone service.
This is why everyone says stay in groups. Seriously, don't even bother trying to use your phone for anything besides selfies because it won't work.
Good luck trying to get anywhere.
There will be more people on Court Street and campus than you can imagine, and trying to go somewhere will be tougher than trying to get into Broney's when you're underage.
The buddy system is your best friend if you don't want to lose your best friend.
Make sure you stay with your friends otherwise you won't see them for the rest of the night, not to mention your friends from out of town will not know where they are.
Once the block party is in full swing it's actually pretty fun.
It's a party like you've never experienced before, and even if you hate crowds you'll probably enjoy yourself at least a little bit.
Around midnight everything gets shut down, and it's time to go home.
It's a little sad because the block party was so fun, but it's probably a good thing that you aren't staying out, because ya know, people get arrested a lot on this night.
And don't even bother ordering food because it'll look kind of like this:
It will take longer for your food to get to wherever you are than it takes for One Direction fans to find out about a break up.
In the end, HallOUween is fun as long as you're smart about the situations you put yourself in and as long as you're with good people. Here's hoping that the out-of-towners don't ruin it though.
