Hair Q&A: Your hair questions answered
French Academy of Cosmetology

I've been in beauty school for a while now, and while the ignorantly rude questions and comments about my career path have for the most part stopped, I get bombarded with beauty questions left and right, which I don't mind at all. Its what I'm going to school for and part of my job as a stylist is to educate and inform my clients about the services they get done and about any other beauty question they may have. Today's technology is a blessing and curse for hair stylists and salons. Our clients have a endless supply of ideas at their finger tips, but they also have the option to find our products we sell at salons online for a discounted price. Salons also rely on retail sales. The internet isn't the most reliable source when it comes to anything, but especially your hair, following the wrong advice can be dangerous to the health of your hair.

I took to social media to gather up a few questions that are frequently asked.

How often should someone get their hair cut? –Mary

6 weeks, but everyone’s hair is different. If you notice that its growing faster then you can adjust it based on that. It also depends on the cut you have as well. But for a regular trim to keep the ends off and your hair healthy, 6 weeks.

How much conditoner should I use? How does it effect my hair if I use too much? -Erin

Dime to silver dollar size depending on your hair thickness and length. Too much conditoner, especially drugstore brand, can really weigh the hair down, making it look flat and have no volume at all. Its especially noticeable in thin, pin staight hair. Condioner doesn’t clean the hair, it makes it soft and managble, so cutting the amount down will really make a difference you’ll be able to feel.

How can I get my hair to grow? –Jen

Getting your haircut every 6 weeks, dead hair wont grow. But if that still doesn’t work there are vitamins and vitamin infused prodcuts. Biotin, but heres the catch- It makes the hair EVERYWHERE grow. You’ll have beautiful hair on your head, but other places as well. So I always recommend, OGX Biotin shampoo and conditioner as well as the serum. It worked wonders for me and my thinning hair.

Other questions I’m asked constantly by my clients are:

How can I keep my color to last and not look as washed out?

Limit the amount of times youre washing your hair. Try and go every other day, or every 3 days. Dry shampoo will be your best friend when training your hair.

How can I keep my hair healthy between haircuts?

I swear by coconut oil, I buy mine from the organic isle at stop and shop, I take a small amount from the jar and rub it on my ends after a shower. I also use it as a hair masque, 30 minutes and wash it out and my hair is super soft.

You also do not have to break the bank for healthy and great hair. The products I use are affordable and can be brought at CVS.

I use anything Not Your Mothers- their beach spray makes even my pin stright hair hold beach waves! And their Plump For Joy is the best volume serum my roots have ever been graced with.

Whole Blends by Garnier coconut oil is my go to to get rid of frizz and static after a blow out. And it just smells amazing.

OGX anything is fab. Their coconut oil anti breakage serum is perf for those who have overprocessed or overworked hair. Their whole line has anything and everything for every hair type.

How your hair looks can make or break your day, if your hair looks good youre going to feel good for the whole day/night. If you take care of your hair, and listen to the professionals, I promise your that your hair is going to take care of you by cooperating and staying beautiful even in between salon visits.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
